NHSBT Clinical Fellow - Haematology with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham, West Midlands
Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow at ST3+ level, to join the transfusion team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). The appointee must have experience of working in haematology and must have passed the MRCP (or its equivalent) and the FRCPath, and must be registered with GMC. The successful candidate will be based predominantly at QEHB and will participate in the management of the transfusion service across UHB. This will include working with the transfusion laboratory team, the transfusion practitioners and with the clinical haematology Haemostasis, Liaison and Transfusion team. The appointee will be allocated 2 sessions/1 day per week working at NHSBT Blood and Transplant, within the Patient Blood Management, Components, Red Cell Immunohaematology and Donor Medicine Teams in order to gain experience of subspecialty transfusion medicine. This is a fixed term one year post and the appointee will be expected to undertake the following duties: Patient/ Client Care The appointee will support the management of patients with transfusion needs across the Trust. This will include quality improvement and service development work including undertaking audits and writing clinical guidelines. Close collaboration with clinical teams such as cardiac surgery, solid organ transplant teams, trauma and the emergency department, obstetrics, paediatrics and anaesthetics will be required. The appointee will work closely with the Transfusion Practitioner team across all sites reviewing adverse events and supporting training. Attendance at the weekly clinical review meetings is expected, and it is anticipated that the fellow will lead these meetings following obtaining appropriate experience. Support will be provided to the laboratory surrounding complex cases and/or where clinical liaison is required. Demand management of blood requesting will also be undertaken as part of the post. About us At NHSBT Clinical fellow will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will have the opportunity to undertake work in the following areas: 1.Acquire subspecialty skills and experience in a.Components b.Donor medicine c.Red cell immunohaematology d.Patient blood management (PBM) 2.Acquire further knowledge of a.Manufacturing and logistics b.Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics c.Cell, apheresis and gene therapies d.Haemovigilance e.Research, audit and quality improvement All clinical duties will be under the direct or indirect supervision of a haematology consultant. It is expected that the appointee will undertake one clinic per week. This can be discussed following successful appointment to the post, although the default clinic would be a general haematology clinic at QEHB.
