We care for a diverse population of patients with no two days being the same. 5A is a supportive nurturing ensuring development of staff and quality patient care. As a band 6 we expect confidence in leading the ward from the bedside, excellent care, role modelling to staff, and a can-do attitude while developing a team. Chemotherapy competence is a must, and being a registered practice assessor, essential as the ward is a learning environment for students on placement. The candidate should show leadership qualities and deputise for the senior sister in their absence. The applicant should possess a keen interest in audit and participating in audit processes to influence patient care and safety. 5A is the designated tracheostomy ward for all cancers at Bart’s and expect candidates to support and develop junior staff in developing competencies within this aspect of patient care. The ward can be challenging but is very rewarding with immense job satisfaction in the care that you provide and in seeing the development of staff; student, health care assistant or staff nurses all grow and flourish with the experiences on 5A. Opportunities to develop exist through our links with our affiliated universities, Cancer specific modules are provided by The Royal Marsden School, based in Fulham. We are proud that many staff start their careers with us following placements with us which adds to the reward of the role. To provide the highest standard of individualised and holistic patient care to cancer patients in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team. To supervise and teach junior members of staff and learners as required, and maintain own personal development with support. To provide high quality nursing care to patients and their families, in accordance with agreed policies.
