The on-call specialty doctor is part of the cardiothoracic resuscitation team, and provides ward based-cover to the 3 cardiothoracic wards. The on call specialty doctor will be responsible for admitting cardiology referrals from the A and E department. The candidate is responsible for the admission and preliminary management of elective and inter-hospitaltransfer patients. Each specialty doctor is assigned to a consultant team for regular ward rounds and 1-2-cardiology out-patients. There will be the opportunity to perform DC cardioversion for cardiac arrhythmias. There will be the opportunity to observe diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterisation, the insertion of temporary and permanent pacemakers and implantable defibrillators, the insertion of intra-aortic balloon pumps, transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography.
