These include:, Ortho-geriatrics; Front door Frailty; Community Geriatrics; Surgical liaison; Education and Training; , In-reach to Nursing Homes in collaboration with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care where appropriate to provide an integrated service for patients. To provide OPD elderly medical services, this may include the development of an outpatient specialist subject e.g. Follow up of discharged patients The Care of the Elderly team provide Consultant cover to 64 acute inpatients on the New Cross site and 47 patients in our Rehabilitation wards based at New Cross and Cannock Hospitals. To provide a cross- cover arrangement with Elderly Consultants including annual leave cover for all in-patient and community acute services. The post holder will be responsible for 14 beds. To work with colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team to implement Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment To develop such special skills and interests appropriate to the agreed overall development of the department. To take an equal share of general acute medical takes and be responsible within the Consultant based ward system for continuing care which operates over 7 days per week. This includes taking part in the weekend review rota, to review all new patients, ill patients and other patients on Care of the Elderly wards and outlying wards. To develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate, where appropriate, in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities. Clinics will be on a basis of 3 new patients and 6 follow up patients. To take joint responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors in the department. This will include 7 FY1/2, 4 GPVTS, 2 IMTs, 2 junior clinical fellows, up to 4 senior clinical fellows and 5 SpRs. These juniors work mainly on the care of the elderly wards, with 1 SpR to support working on frailty and the community. The post holder will be expected to be Clinical Supervisor for those juniors allocated to the ward for which the consultant is responsible and may wish to undertake training to become an Educational Supervisor. The post holder will also be involved in the teaching of 3rd, 4th and 5th year medical students from Birmingham Medical School. There is the possibility of becoming academy tutor and honorary lecturer. This is an exciting opportunity to join our expanding Geriatric Medicine team for a Consultant who wishes to join an established team of enthusiastic and dynamic Geriatricians. Colleagues joining this team will work alongside consultants who are embracing new ways of working and helping to shape services that support older persons care in innovative ways. We provide high quality inpatient care at New Cross Hospital which includes 7-day cover as part of rota and specialist rehabilitation services at Cannock Hospital for older persons. As a service we are undertaking a wide variety of exciting projects including creation of a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, Orthogeriatric service delivery in line with the 'Blue Book' recommendations, Perioperative Older Persons service (POPS).
