Since 2000, UHB has operated a tertiary referral service for the follow up of adult patients with congenital heart disease. The ACHD unit provides all aspects of care for these patients and currently there are five consultants Drs Paul Clift, Lucy Hudsmith, Sarah Bowater, Sayqa Arif and Nada Al-Sakini, with support for the interventional congenital cardiology service coming from Dr Chetan Mehta (Birmingham Childrens Hospital). The new post holder will contribute to the outpatient and inpatient care of all ACHD patients. They will also run 2-3 outpatient clinics at UHB and contribute to the ward rounds of the ACHD inpatients, which occur daily. Dr Lucy Hudsmith provides an obstetric cardiology service for ACHD patients in collaboration with Birmingham Womens Hospital (Drs Caroline Fox and James Castleman), managing high-risk pregnancies in patients with cardiac disease. Several outreach clinics are undertaken throughout the West Midlands and the successful applicant will be required to contribute to these. The unit has a developing research programme and the post holder would be encouraged to contribute towards the programme. A sub-speciality interest of advanced heart failure and heart transplant within the field of ACHD will be encouraged. Share in the running of the ACHD service for both acute and elective patients. They will share consultant inpatient care of ACHD patients, ensuring at least 3 consultant-led ward rounds a week in addition to the clinical meetings and clinical audit sessions. 2-3 outpatient clinics and a sub-speciality interest in advanced heart failure management and heart transplant in ACHD in addition to providing a general cardiology service for the Trust. There will be a commitment to contribute to weekly ACHD MDT and transplant meetings. The new appointee will have a key role in helping to further develop all aspects of the ACHD service. Several ACHD outreach clinics are undertaken throughout the West Midlands and the successful applicant may be required to contribute to these. On call commitment for general cardiology (currently 1:31). Consultant of the week is responsible for acute cardiology admissions, daily CCU rounds and co-ordination of inter-hospital transfers in liaison with senior nursing staff. Contribute to the cardiology in-reach service to the acute medical unit, currently 8-4 Monday to Friday. There is a separate PCI on call rota (1:7) and the non-interventional cardiologists support the PCI team at weekend during their general on-call week. The appointee will share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department and take part in the joint on call rota of the department, 1:31 for general cardiology.
