Previous team leader / management experience is essential in this instance For formal enquires please contact Lead Nurse Aislinn Giles via email aislinn.giles@nhs.net The Surgical Oncology Unit is a busy, dynamic unit which assesses, and plans care for a range of patients pre and post operatively. We work alongside a wide MDT who are based on the unit to implement a high standard of care for all of our patients. The successful candidate will need to have significant experience in surgical oncology nursing. They will also need to have strong leadership skills, be a positive role model within the team and have quality care at the for front of everything they do. A key aspect of the role is to be a clinical lead on the unit. The role is to ensure the units are safely staffed, to develop the teams, to contribute to practice development and maintain standards on the unit. The successful candidate will need excellent communication skills, and be able to work productively with other members of the team - both across The SOU and externally. About us DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide management support for staff and act as preceptor to designated staff 2. To lead the Ward patients services. Review and implement change to the service to support ongoing improvements in clinical practice reflecting capacity and demand issues 3. To liaise with the bed manager and the surgical speciality teams to ensure optimal bed usage 4. Liaise with discharge team/Senior Sisters for optimal bed usage involving ward transfers out 5. Close collaboration with medical staff to ensure realistic and efficient bed usage 6. Assess, plan and implement clinical care and maintain associated patient records 7. To organise daily work schedule and off duty rotas ensuring appropriate and effective skill mix and deployment of staff for appropriate patient needs 8. To assist in maintaining the staff and non-staff budget within agreed limits. 9. Collaborate with other service providers in ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness and nutrition are achieved. 10. Be aware of Health and Safety issues and ensure relevant risk assessments are undertaken. 11. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy, investigating speedily and compassionately 12. Ensure all Trust policies and procedures are adhered to and new ones implemented as necessary 13. To ensure all team members adhere to the uniform policy and maintain professional image for the unit 14. Report to Senior Nurse /Modern Matron on patient affairs/activity and staff development. 15. Support those senior staff acting as appraisers to ensure they have a meaningful and achievable appraisal 16. Ensure each designated staff member participates in a personal development plan and act to maximise the potential of others 17. Assist/lead in the recruitment process for the unit 18. Take a progressive approach to the management of short and long-term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Matron/Service Manager and Human Resources 19. Take appropriate action in relation to any disciplinary matter when the need arises and follow procedures as laid down by the Trust. 20. Supervise the requisition of stocks and equipment with care and economy 21. Act up as required TRAINING & EDUCATION 1. To be up to date in all IV training programs (level 1 and 2) including annual updates and competent in all areas of clinical practice 2. Ensure all staff have an appropriate level of training and are offered relevant support 3. Present at training days and at conference 4. Initiate and undertake research and audit which will influence practice 5. Be up to date and competent with other clinical skills such as performing ECGs, basic life support and intermediate life support. 6. Attend all mandatory study days and ensure attendance of all staff PROFESSIONAL 1. Have expert knowledge and be able to advise and support nursing staff within trust & externally regarding surgical admissions and associated issues 2. Liaise closely with the surgical team and other members of the MDT in respect of patient care promoting the highest standard of care 3. Participate in the on call rota for hospital cover out of hours 4. Represent the unit at the Band 7 forum. 5. To highlight areas of improvement/development within the department andundertake relevant projects 6. Keep abreast of issues influencing the Trust both internally and externally andensure senior colleagues and the team have a good understanding of thesame 7.
