The Team is supported by clinical research fellows, an FY2 trainee and an advanced surgical care practitioner. The Gynaecological Oncology Team provides 24/7 emergency cover for gynaecological oncology patients with no formal commitment towards the obstetrics or general gynaecological rota. Birmingham is host of numerous excellent schools including top grammar schools in the country and is a family-friendly, affordable city with vibrant cultural life. Applicants for this post are required to have CCT or equivalent (or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT, at the time of interview) and entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology, with a full GMC registration. Applications are invited for a full-time locum consultant post in gynaecological oncology with the aim to convert it to a substantive post. Birmingham became home to one of the first gynaecological cancer centres in the United Kingdom in the 1970's and as such has been instrumental in the development of gynaecological oncology as a profession. Over the decades, our service has evolved and developed resulting in national and international recognition for the high-level care provided by the multidisciplinary team. We have built a particularly strong portfolio in surgery for patients with advanced ovarian cancer, recurrent cancers, vulval cancer. In addition, our Centre has a strong research history with an in-house academic programme in conjunction with the University of Birmingham. Birmingham has an excellent reputation for training and education and is one of the most prestigious gynaecological oncology training centres in the United Kingdom. The post holder will be expected to work in a team of four clinical Gynaecological Oncologists and two academic-clinical Gynaecological Oncologists, and will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including four on-site CNSs. The Team has a strong portfolio in ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery, pelvic exenterative surgery, minimal invasive surgery and the post holder is expected to participate in this work. Our robotics programme is well established now and we recently started our HIPEC programme. Our Team has strong links with the regional Sarcoma Centre, the colorectal, uro-oncology and hepatobiliary surgeons. Mentoring for the newly appointed consultant will be available within the team. The Cancer Centre is currently hosted by City Hospital but our service will move to the Trust's state-of-art new site, the nearby Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in November 2024. Our Centre covers four outreach clinics and unit MDT meetings in Greater Birmingham and Walsall; the post holder will be expected to cover one of these clinics and a unit MDT meeting. The Cancer Centre Team is committed to continue to improve and develop the service to provide the best possible care for the women with gynaecological cancers in Birmingham and the West Midlands.
