Working in extended role outside ophthalmology clinics, i.e. without medical support in clinic, e.g. Childrens Vision Clinic. Refraction, including adult and paediatric; diagnostic and post-operative cases. Medical Contact Lenses. Low Vision Clinics, adult and paediatric. Refracting patients to specific protocols as part of studies. Supervising junior staff in their clinical roles. To undertake specialist clinical activity; this activity requires regular use of a range of advanced clinical techniques requiring dexterity and concentration. These clinics involve responsibility for clinical decision-making with support from consultants and the provision of specialised diagnosis, management, care and education of patients. To provide a clinical opinion or obtain a clinical opinion from consultant colleagues to optometric and non-optometric colleagues on the management of patients. Our main site is at City Road, London but we have a large, and growing, number of interdisciplinary satellite clinics at which optometric services are provided. The Optometry Department has expanded rapidly with increasing extended role activities across Moorfields' sites. The Optometry Department has over 160 optometrists and provides clinical services for refraction, low vision assessment, medical contact lenses as well as extended role. We play a significant role in the training of ophthalmic professionals and in collaboration with UCL our optometry education has recently expanded to provide College of Optometrists Higher Qualifications. Our research priorities reflect the developing role of optometrists and our close links with the Institute of Ophthalmology. We are supported by our spectacle and contact lens laboratories.
