The post holder will complement and develop existing services through the provision of specialist knowledge & expertise in intensive care medicine. The post holder is therefore required to have full registration with the GMC and a valid licence to practice and be on the specialist register for intensive care medicine or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent at the time of interview. Applicants from Single ICM CCT and Dual ICM CCT backgrounds are encouraged. The post will be based primarily at The James Cook University Hospital, with job plans reflecting the individual interests of the appointee. Consultants in dual CCT specialities may be required to undertake some clinical commitment at The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, dependent on their dual speciality. The General Critical Care Unit presently incorporates 33 beds, used flexibly between level 3 and level 2 depending on patient need. The unit provides tertiary services for Major Trauma, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Upper GI and Spinal Cord Injured patients as well as a variety of medical specialties including Nephrology, Haematology and Oncology. Clinical Overview: Four consultants cover the units during the daytime. A flexible rota design is on offer to compliment the individual requirements of any post-holder. A standard day is 8-6pm with two consultants covering until 9pm. There is a strong Consultant presence out of hours. The current night time on call frequency is at present 1:14 for full time consultants. Night time on call is resident until 10 pm 7 days per week and non-resident thereafter dependent on clinical requirements. The Critical Care Consultant team is supported by a strong middle grade tier comprising of highly experienced Staff Grades, Specialty Trainees in ICM, Clinical Fellows, MTI Fellows and Anaesthetic trainees. We have 2 middle grade doctors resident overnight. The resident rota contains an expanding number of ACCP's (5 fully qualified with 3 in training), speciality trainees, foundation doctors and trust doctors.
