The post holder(s) will work in the award winning Brunel building at Southmead Bristol and will benefit from the large clinical caseload catering to an adult population over 2.5 million and delivers in excess of 4000 emergency and elective operations a year. All Consultant neurosurgeons have a sub-specialty interest and all the major neurosurgical subspecialties such as Oncology, skullbase, vascular, epilepsy, movement disorders, complex spine and complex pain are well represented. There are 64 ward beds, 12 neuro HDU beds as well as additional shared ITU beds and a wide range of allied clinical specialties such as neurology, neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, Speech & language therapy and specialist neuro-rehabilitation. The successful applicant will be expected to have adequate experience in neurosurgery to take part in the emergency work of the department (multi tier middle grade rota) including competency in basic cranial and spinal procedures. For the right candidate there might be opportunities to pursue research in their chosen subspecialty. The successful applicant will be assigned to work with one of the above Consultants. They will provide assistance in theatre, undertake a daily ward round and liaise with their Consultant regarding management decisions. They will attend outpatients and the clinical meetings. There is a daily 8:00 a.m. combined clinical and radiology meeting; a weekly tumour MDT, fortnightly skullbase MDT, weekly epilepsy and movement disorders MDT, regular journal clubs and an academic teaching program. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in departmental teaching and would be expected to participate in clinical governance and audit activities. The out of hours commitment is a hybrid rota (consisting of 18 doctors) of four tiers of middle grade doctors depending on their experience in neurosurgery with the senior most tier providing support as non resident on-call. The emergency neurosurgical work will be from the same catchment population. There is a separate rota of complex spine surgery consultants (drawn from both neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal units) who support the on-call registrar. About us Must have registration with the General Medical Particular experience required for appointment: Operative experience in basic neurosurgical procedures required for on-call service Neurosurgical Registrar level experience MRCS/FRCS or equivalent. The passing of a medical examination is a condition of appointment of all practitioners within the scope of the National Health Service Superannuation The successful applicant will be required to provide documentary evidence of natural or acquired immunity to hepatitis B and other transmissible infections as required by Occupational health. Where this is not possible, the postholder will be required to demonstrate by recent (within the last year) evidence of serology showing immunity. These provisions are to meet the requirements of the Department of Healths instructions to trusts (HSC(93)40). The full-time equivalent basic salary applicable on commencement will be assessed on the basis of your work schedule and may comprise one or more of the following: If your work schedule requires you to undertake additional hours of work over and above the standard week of 40 hours, you will be paid at the rate of 1/40th of the full time equivalent basic pay; If part of the work in your rota is undertaken at a time which attracts an enhanced hourly rate of pay, an enhancement of the hourly basic pay rate shall be paid on any hours worked between 21.00 and 07.00, on any day of the week. The number of hours in the rota for which an enhancement is paid will be assessed across the length of the rota cycle If you are required to participate in work at the weekend, at a minimum frequency of 1 in 8 across the length of the rota cycle, you will be paid an allowance.
