Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust in Stoke On Trent
To work as part of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit MMDT to deliver a high quality, holistic service to all babies and families who require admission to the Neonatal Unit or Transitional Care Unit. The candidate will work 85% clinically within the Tier 1 rota, under the supervision of the middle grade doctor and neonatal consultant, on a shift by shift basis. The candidate will work 15% within a non-clinical capacity and will lead quality improvements and develop specific areas of interest, which align to the four pillars of advanced clinical practice. To provide a high quality service, deliverable through the following domains: Clinical Practice 85% Non-Clinical Practice 15% Management & Leadership Education, Research & Audit Quality & Governance About us Clinical (85%) Work independently on the tier 1 rota, under the supervision of the middle grade neonatal doctor and neonatal consultants Carry out assessment of infants on the postnatal wards, including first medical examination. Refer to appropriate specialists and/or admit to NNU. Perform formal discharge examinations and determine whether a baby is fit for discharge. Attend high-risk deliveries for the resuscitation, stabilisation and safe transfer of newborn infants Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide expert clinical care and management for infants and their families admitted to the Neonatal Unit, using advanced skills, in accordance with unit guidelines and protocols Advanced skills include: The ability to perform the necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures associated with neonatal intensive care; including endotracheal intubation, peripheral and umbilical venous cannulation, peripheral and umbilical arterial cannulation, insertion of percutaneous central venous lines, lumbar puncture, venepuncture, capillary sampling and withdrawal of blood from indwelling arterial lines. Initiation and subsequent management of mechanical ventilation and monitoring of blood gases and alteration of ventilator settings accordingly. Initiation of treatment including prescription of drugs, intravenous fluids, infusions, blood transfusions etc. Obtaining, interpreting and monitoring laboratory investigations and responding to them appropriately Planning and implementing individual management and care plans in collaboration with nursing, medical and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of the neonate. Requesting, interpreting and responding to other investigations such as x-rays, ECGs, ultrasound scans and blood tests. Providing counselling and support for parents whose babies are receiving intensive care. Undertaking transport of neonates to other departments and/or other hospitals. Non-clinical/ Supporting professional Activity (15%) Active participation in clinical audit, guidelines, education of medical and nursing staff, managerial and other administrative duties. Support and facilitate the education of the neonatal team, develop and review protocols and guidelines. Develop and maintain nursing information systems, and ensure that written documentation is kept in respect of investigations and incidents.
