GUY'S AND ST. THOMAS' HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST Vitreo Retina Senior Clinical Fellow in Vitreo Retina Nodal point 5 - (£ 70, 425 p.a. excluding LZ) Fixed Term - 1 year Full Time - 40 hours per week (including 1:10 on call commitment) The vitreo-retinal service comprises of: Mr Alistair Laidlaw (consultant) Mr Tom Williamson (consultant) Mr Roger Wong (consultant) 3 x V.R Fellow (including this post) 1 x V.R TSC trainee On Call The post holder is included in the VR on call rota (normally 1 in 4) Audit All Departments at Guy's and at St Thomas' should be active in audit and you should be actively involved as part of your training. Within the department you should be able to obtain advice and training in non clinical subjects including: management principles and skills, communication skills, computer skills, writing papers and the place of research and higher degrees in training for a clinical career. Audit is co-ordinated by Scott Robbie and meetings take place on a Wednesday. Trainees are also encouraged to join in the numerous teaching opportunities available within the Trust. 4 Research Research is a core aspect of this position. Post holders will be encouraged and supported to develop and area of active research. This will be undertaken with the supervision of one of the consultant ophthalmologists. The department has an active research programme and junior doctors are encouraged to participate in this programme and follow their interests. Assistance with research techniques and statistical analysis is readily available within the department and the hospital. About us Other Duties and responsibilities: Clinical: The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include: (a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required. (b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff. Training of junior staff: The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant. Teaching: The postholder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Clinical Governance: All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal. Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours: There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to co-operate with those monitoring arrangements. European Working Time Directive (EWTD): All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD Educational Programme: Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the postholder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x-ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc. Appraisal: All medical and dental staff are required to undertake appraisal. Other: The list of duties and responsibilities given above is not an exhaustive list and you may be asked to undertake other duties in line with the overall purpose and nature of the post as may be required from time to time. This job description reflects core activities of a post at a particular time. The trust expects that all staff will recognise this and adopt a flexible approach to work. All staff are expected to contribute to the smooth running of their clinical service as required; in particular, to comply with the policies and procedures, Standing Orders and Financial Regulations of the trust. Regular teaching and instruction are encouraged in the clinical setting. There is an active teaching program on Wednesday afternoons, to introduce and explore topics specific to ophthalmology. Additional experience forms a central component of these posts and will be appropriately supported. Basic competency is self-assessed at entry, and then continually assessed by consultant staff. Feedback will be part of the appraisal process. This post offers the opportunity to combine clinical experience which an interest in research. Study Leave: Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Clinical Lead. Funding for CPD will be equivalent to that of the appropriate Training post.
