Location: Worcester Job Description: We are currently seeking dedicated and skilled HCA Phlebotomists to join our Surgical Division at Worcester Royal Hospital. As a Phlebotomist in the surgical wards, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient collection of blood samples from patients 7 days a week. Your responsibilities will include: Collecting blood samples with precision and care. Collaborating with the medical team to prioritise and organise sample collections. Ensuring correct labelling and documentation of samples. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment. For more information regarding the role, please contact ward manager Amy Clarke via email at: amy.clarke45@nhs.net Demonstrate competency as a phlebotomist for inpatients Responsible for day to day management for the taking of phlebotomy procedures Working with the ward managers To co-ordinate the tasks required of the Phlebotomy team on the surgical inpatient wards To mentor, supervise and teach new members of the Phlebotomy team Participate in service development Assist with the production and modification of Standard Operating procedures The post holder will prioritise and visit the wards on a daily basis, in order to collect blood samples as requested by the clinical teams The post holder will liaise with clinical and nursing teams and be aware of ward rules and procedures such as consultant rounds, treatments and protected meal times, which may require a modification in the phlebotomy schedules The post holder will assess and confirm the patients identity matches that on the request form, following trust policy. The post holder will ensure accurate and legible labelling of specimen tubes, following the Trust Policy The post holder will inform the clinical staff and document on blood request form if it was not possible to obtain a blood sample. Carry the In-House Phlebotomy bleep at all times ensuring it is answered in a timely manner and address all issues raised through this, keeping accurate records and escalating to a manager where needed. Any discrepancies must be reported to the appropriate clinician or nurse in charge The post holder will reassure the patient and alleviate any anxieties relating to the collection of blood and formally ask for permission to collect the blood specimen. If the patient refuses, the post holder must end the procedure and report to the appropriate clinician or nurse in charge, documenting the refusal. The post holder will ascertain the specimen requirements and collect blood by venepuncture into appropriate containers The post holder will ensure accurate and legible labelling of specimen tubes, following the Trust Policy The post holder will inform the clinical staff and document on blood request form if it was not possible to obtain a blood sample. The post holder will ensure that specimens are sent to the laboratory by the POD system or in person. The post holder will dispose of clinical waste in line with Trust Policies Carry the In-House Phlebotomy bleep at all times ensuring it is answered in a timely manner and address all issues raised through this, keeping accurate records and escalating to a manager where needed. Risk Assessment The post involves manual handling activities, exposure to bodily fluids and exposure to high noise levels. It may also involve exposure to challenging behaviour.
