The Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) is a fast paced and dynamic department at the John Radcliffe Hospital, caring for patients with a wide range of emergency general surgical conditions, covering upper and lower gastrointestinal, and hepatobiliary specialties. The unit has 62 in-patient beds across 3 ward areas and a Emergency Triage that receives patients referred directly by GP, the Emergency Department , paramedic referrals or out-patient clinics . The Ambulatory area sits as part of Triage but sees patients who return daily to receive consultant led care. An opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic, dynamic and committed Deputy Sister/ Charge Nurse within the Surgical Emergency Unit D Side at the John Radcliffe Hospital. We are looking for an individual who is proactive and motivated to deliver high-quality, safe and compassionate patient care, demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills and work well within a multidisciplinary team. The successful applicant will be coordinating SEU D Side supporting the nursing staff and manage the patients flow leasing with the SEU Bleep holder ensuring effective flow of patients and providing clinical leadership. The post holder will also lead a small team of nurses with the support of the ward sister; ensuring staff have an annual appraisal and appropriate training. The post holder is expected to support the Ward Sisters with Ulysses investigations, patients complaint and monthly audits. For additional information, please contact Ward Sister, Natasha Walker. About us Be professionally accountable for assessment of the patients needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of planned care, demonstrating a collaborative approach through effective communication and decision-making between the multi-professional team, patients and significant others. Demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the management of the changing health care needs of the patient, responding to changes promptly and appropriately and developing specialised plans of care/ follow relevant protocols in collaboration with other senior nurses/medical staff. Develop and strengthen interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team thereby ensuring a good team spirit and collaborative and holistic working practices To demonstrate understanding follow trust procedures and inform senior staff of any safeguarding concerns as per hospital policy Identify and discuss nursing / patient needs with multi disciplinary team, patients, and carers, assisting colleagues in patient care where appropriate Contribute toward Triage projects, audits and quality initiatives as directed by the SENPs / Matron / Surgical Team Be accountable for some specific responsibilities that contribute toward the organisational and administrative work of the unit Ensure equipment supplies, disposables and staffing resources are used appropriately when implementing care and treatments Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors as detailed in departmental and Trust protocols and procedures Demonstrate ability to manage time, support, monitor and report difficulties experienced by junior staff to senior staff Demonstrate an awareness of local / Trust policies and procedures and ability to educate, support and supervise staff in implementation Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of local, divisional, organizational and governmental policies and agendas identifying implications for patient care, staff management and budgetary targets Person Specification Essential Registered Nurse Evidence of ongoing professional development Mentorship qualification Experience in an acute healthcare setting Experience managing staff Excellent written communication skills Desirable Diploma or degree Specialist experience, knowledge and skills in General Surgery Experienced in venepuncture & cannulation Management or leadership training Emergency Care experience
