The Governor (GofEC) is the ceremonial lead for the Army in Scotland with a remit to promote and maintain the Army’s profile at a senior level with a wide range of external organisations and senior influencers. The GofEC is a part-time Reservist officer, usually with other employment commitments, therefore the Personal Assistant provides important continuity of support.
The Brigade, as the enabling HQ, co-ordinates, resources and supports General Officer Scotland (GOS) in his engagement activities to the benefit of the Army in Scotland. In addition, and specific to Scotland, the Governor of Edinburgh Castle fulfils a ceremonial role for Edinburgh Castle, hosting and engaging VVIPs when required. Here at Headquarters 51 Brigade and Headquarters Scotland, we are an inclusive and dedicated team, working to provide excellent support to our Military and Civilian staff.
The successful candidate will support the Governor of Edinburgh Castle (SM to GofEC) and his outer office personnel and on occasion General Officer Scotland (GOS), also the Protocol Officer in delivery of Army strategic engagement in Scotland through the coordination of formal and ceremonial activities.

Job Description
The Support Manager manages all aspects of the outer office of the Governor of Edinburgh Castle (GofEC). They provide direct support to the Protocol Officer ensuring the delivery of State Ceremonial and Public Duty tasks including Royal Gun Salutes and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Duties And Responsibilities:
- Fund manager ensuring adherence to policy and effective management and successful inspection of the accounts.
- Electronic Purchasing Card (ePC) holder purchasing items outside of internal processes as required for events/tasks within delegated limits.
- Contracting Purchasing and Finance (CP&F) system user for purchasing internally.
- Lead on the generation of business cases for official hospitality and public funding for events.
- Lead on Royal Garden Party co-ordination for Army attendees.
- Area Custodian for Safety, Health, Environment and Fire (SHEF) including generation of Risk Assessments and maintenance of the Risk Register.
- Inventory manager for the VVIP mess annex (Governors Quarter) including the management of high value items on loan from museums/institutions/individuals reviewing insurance and maintenance.
- Line Management responsibility for the Administrative Officer.
- As required generate, briefing packs, correspondence, travel itineraries, diary management, filing and event co-ordination often for VVIP level activities.
- During periods of leave/absence/post gapping be prepared to cover roles and tasks normally covered by the Protocol Officer, the Governors aide-de-camp (ADC) and the Administrative Officer (PA).
- Flexibility may be required in working pattern with occasional out of hours working whilst supporting events. This would be overtime or time owed in lieu.
