Reporting to the relevant line manager, the Technical Support Officer's primary function is to support a range of statutory services related to public and animal health protection at the Port of Belfast (PoB) Border Control Post, in compliance with UK, NI, and EU legislation.

The role involves independently or collaboratively working with Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) to manage and control imported food, liaising with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and other partner bodies as needed. The post-holder may be exposed to food allergens, including fish, peanuts, and tree nuts.


Your Duties:

  • Legislative Compliance: Apply checks according to UK, NI, and EU legislation to protect public and animal health.
  • Communication: Handle general Port Health emails and phone calls, making decisions or referring cases to EHOs as necessary.
  • Manifest Coding: Under EHO supervision, code manifests for vessels arriving at PoB, applying holds for identity checks, physical examinations, and sampling.
  • Product Checks: Perform manifest and ID checks on low-risk products and preliminary checks on high-risk products, advising on irregularities and liaising with agents or importers for further information.
  • Seal Checks: Conduct seal checks on consignments, ensuring accurate database updates and proper documentation.
  • Destruction Management: Ensure goods are directed to the correct facility for destruction and manage the destruction of unsatisfactory consignments.
  • Transhipment Processing: Handle transhipment release requests, ensuring proper documentation and legislative checks are conducted.
  • Ship Sanitation: Board vessels to examine paperwork and check compliance with ship sanitation controls, assisting EHOs with inspections and water sampling.
  • Administrative Tasks: Maintain records, operate Information Management Systems, and ensure accurate information recording.
  • Customer Guidance: Provide advice to customers, agents, and importers on import requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Health and Safety: Assess health and safety risks, ensuring compliance with safe working practices, particularly when boarding vessels.

Your Profile:

  • Full, current driving licence valid in Northern Ireland and access to a vehicle for official business use.
  • Third-level qualification in a relevant subject (e.g., food science, food technology, business/retail management, logistics and supply chain management, quality management).

Your Benefits:

  • £16.12 per hour.
  • Pension Contribution.

  • Full time, Temporary.
  • 42 hours per week (shift work, including nights).
