Duties and responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:

  • Providing dental hygiene treatment in line with their approved scope of practice as per GDC guidelines and in accordance with agreed patient group directive (PGD).
  • Carrying out dental work under the direction of a registered dentist who has examined the patient and indicated in writing the course of treatment to be provided. This is in accordance with the Dental Auxiliary Regulations 1986, as amended by the Dental Auxiliaries (amended) Regulations 1991.
  • Maintaining the standard and cleanliness of the surgery and accommodation for which they are responsible, reporting any deficiencies in accordance with local protocols.
  • Undertaking CPD in the core subjects of medical emergencies, Infection Prevention Control (IPC), disinfection and decontamination, radiography and radiation protection, legal and ethical issues and handling complaints, as recommended by the GDC.
  • Maintaining immunological protection against Hepatitis B in accordance with current guidelines, advising the line manager of any change to immunological status.
