KEY DUTIES

  • To develop the skills to care for acutely unwell patients.
  • Liaise with senior Medical/Medical staff to provide a high-quality service to patients and their families.
  • Offer advice / support to staff as required.
  • Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to maximise best use of resources.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the principles of Improving Working Lives.
  • Promote a safe working environment in accordance with Risk Management principles.


CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under supervision perform comprehensive assessments of ill patients, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health needs and varying levels of complexity.
  • Ensure patient records are maintained and that documentation reflects care provided.
  • Involve patients / carers / relatives in the planning and delivery of services within the Unit area.
  • Promote and maintain effective communication with patients, relatives or carers.
  • Assist in urgent and emergency situations within a level of experience as directed by senior staff.
  • Develop skills to undertake specialist activities within practitioners Scope of Professional Practice.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments of acutely ill patients, plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health needs and varying levels of complexity.
  • Communicate sensitive / unpleasant / complex information to patients / relatives or others in a variety of settings.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Develop skills to undertake specialist activities within practitioners Scope of Professional Practice
  • Report untoward incidents / accidents in accordance with Trust policy, ensuring IR1 forms filled in as indicated.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
  • Participate in activities that lead to service improvement, through benchmarking, audit or research.
  • Encourage the use of new nursing techniques that are based on current evidence-based research.
  • Provide response to patient and relatives complaints.
  • Promote peoples diversity, equality and rights.
  • Be aware of emergency plans and procedures in place and respond appropriately.
  • Support the identification monitoring and review objectives that implement and reflect local, regional and national targets.
  • Promote a safe working environment for staff and service users.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe working order and complies to the Health and Safety at Work Act / HE1 98.


ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure patient records are kept up to date and accurate and recording is done in line with Trust policieis and procedures.


TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote an effective learning environment.
  • Clinically support staff in achieving their work-based competencies.
  • Act as a mentor / preceptor to junior Nursing staff.
  • In role of mentor / preceptor, review staff performance and address issues of poor performance / competence.
  • Continue to develop own knowledge through training, education and professional updates.


LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in building a high profile for your clinical area within the Trust.
  • Report act upon and investigate untoward incident / complaint / concerns, liaising with Matron/Ward Manager where appropriate.
  • Create a climate conducive to the practice of a high standard of care, ensuring the safety and well being of staff, patients and visitors to the department, especially in relation to health and safety.
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of both physical and financial resources.
  • Promote health, safety and security of self and others and implement best practice in the Unit area.
  • Represent your clinical area in internal and external meetings / committees as required.
  • Act as an effective role model and demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Participate in research projects in conjunction with Matron / Ward Manager.
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of both physical and financial resources.
  • Promote health, safety and security of self and others and implement best practice in the Unit area.
  • Develop the skills to participate in duty rostering, annual leave allocation and reporting and management of sickness / absence as required.


RESEARCH & AUDIT

  • To commence and participate in research/special projects as directed by the Ward Manager.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and may be required to demonstrate procedures and supervise both Registered and non Registered staff.
