Duties and ResponsibilitiesProfessional / Clinical responsibilities.

The post holder will liaise and communicate on a regular basis with the following professionals:

  • Patients and families
  • Clinical support workers/nursing assistants
  • Clinical Physiologists from Adult Sleep, Adult Respiratory, Paediatric Cardiology and Neurophysiology
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Consultant Physicians from Sleep, Respiratory and the wider Evelina teams
  • Managers and Administrators
  • Staff of Snow Leopard and ELCH wards.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists in Sleep, Asthma, Long Term Ventilation and ENT.
  • Physiotherapists
  • Administrative & Clerical Support Staff
  • Students & visiting physiologists

Duties and ResponsibilitiesProfessional / Clinical responsibilities

  • Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work performed as an employee of the Childrens Sleep and Respiratory Centre at all times.
  • To perform decontamination/calibration procedures for all sleep and respiratory assessment equipment in accordance with departmental guidelines and to act immediately if there are any queries concerning the safe functioning of equipment or any health & safety concerns.
  • To download patient data from all sleep and respiratory assessment equipment and devices in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the various consumable parts used in the department and maintain stock levels by assisting clinical physiologists
  • Undertake routine admin duties including but not limited to updating databases, scanning documents and answering the telephone
  • Maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly
  • Have awareness of personal limitations and seek advice from the senior physiologists when necessary.
  • To confidently greet patients, relatives and other members of hospital staff, either face to face or by telephone, with enthusiasm, patience and understanding and with a sympathetic and caring manner. Taking into consideration any language and communication difficulties. To demonstrate an awareness and an ability to manage clinical risk To undertake routine and general light cleaning/tidying tasks within clinical areas.

The band 3 post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team towards the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric respiratory and sleep disorders and contribute to and maintain excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice.Time will be split across sleep and respiratory specialities, offering an exciting opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in both clinical areas.

The Children's Sleep and Respiratory Centre is an internationally respected quaternary centre of excellence for the comprehensive investigation and treatment of sleep and respiratory disorders in infants and children. We have 5 dedicated sleep beds and two fully equipped respiratory assessment rooms. Across the service we use innovative approaches and equipment to maintain excellent patient experience for our paediatric population. This includes domiciliary sleep studies, mobile respiratory assessment, ward testing and a home spirometry service. We regularly present at international conferences and are a research active department.

Clinical - Sleep physiological tests

  • Be able to independently prepare home oximetry, carbon dioxide measurements, actigraphy and home respiratory polygraphy studies.
  • After initial training to be able to independently set up and perform any of the sleep investigation studies used within the department (respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography) according to local and national guidelines, including calibration and system checks.
  • Participate in performance of overnight sleep studies according to the roster and maintain accuracy of signals during in patient diagnostic studies.
  • Participate in performance of complex sleep studies involving an intervention (e.g. CPAP trial, BiPAP trial, oxygen therapy titration). Make appropriate adjustments to levels of therapy in accordance with the sleep study admission plan and the parameters set out by local and national guidelines.
