To assist the midwives in the delivery of care to women/birthing people in the hospital and community setting. The post holder carries a defined range of duties delegated by and reported back registered member of the multi-professional team.
The MSW is able to work regularly without direct supervision, reports any concerns, change in the condition of the woman/birthing person and baby and highlights incidents to the midwife responsible for care.
Duties and responsibilities for the role will be discussed and agreed on a daily basis with the midwife in charge, with communication channels open throughout the day for further advice and support.
At Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, we have fantastic new opportunities for a Maternity Support Worker to join our Multi-Professional Team, within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birth Centre, in its deliverance of high quality care to our women/birthing people and their families.
If you have the experience below, we would like your help in supporting women/birthing people and their families in a home-from-home environment.
We have beautiful spacious birthing rooms and a five-bedded induction suite. Your role will involve being supportive of both women/birthing people and midwives. We have a small team of staff who rely on each other for help and support.
You MUST:
- Have previous maternity/ paediatric experience (NOT work experience) to be considered for this role.
- Be an existing Band 3
- Be able to work independently providing care for low-risk women/birthing people
- Be able to perform neonatal observations and recognise deviations from normal.
- Be competent in providing breast feeding support
- Be keen to be part of a family-focussed maternity team
- You will be required to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within all clinical areas i.e. cleaning delivery rooms, theatre, equipment, making beds and keeping a good stock supply.
- You will assist the midwives in the care of women/birthing people antenatally, during labour and postnatally to ensure that planned programmes of care are provided.
- You will participate in the provision of 24-hour cover for the unit, including flexibility to move within team areas as the service requires.
- You will participate in maintaining the general personal hygiene needs of clients where required.
- You will assist in the provision food and drink if required.
- You will be aware of the general condition and wellbeing of women/birthing people and babies by close observation and report any deviation from the norm immediately to a qualified member of the multi-professional team.
- You will provide appropriate advice, within your level of knowledge, to parents on aspects of parenting in relation to the baby's wellbeing and safety.
- You will be pro-active in supporting clients in feeding their babies and give them the advice and assistance they require according to the national and trust guidelines.
- You will maintain accurate records of all care provision in the clinical records.
- You will escort patients to different clinical areas within the unit if required.
- You will be asked to complete neonatal observations, as required.
- You may need to act as a chaperone.
