The Role
- Personal Care: Assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting. This may involve transferring the individual to and from different surfaces, using appropriate lifting techniques and assistive devices.
- Mobility and Transfers: Help with wheelchair transfers, ensuring the individual's safety and comfort. This may include using a mechanical lift or other equipment to transfer the person from the wheelchair to a bed, chair, or other surfaces. Ensure that the wheelchair is properly positioned and adjusted for optimal comfort and stability.
- Assisting with wheelchair use: Familiarize yourself with the specific features and controls of the chin-controlled wheelchair. Help the individual with manoeuvring the wheelchair, including turning, stopping, and navigating obstacles. Ensure the wheelchair is well-maintained, including regular cleaning and charging.
- Positioning and Pressure Relief: Regularly assist with repositioning the individual to prevent pressure sores and maintain proper alignment. This may involve using pillows, cushions, or specialized positioning aids to support different body parts and relieve pressure points.
- Medication Management: Assist with medication administration, ensuring that the individual receives the correct dosage at the prescribed times. This may involve organizing and monitoring medication schedules and communicating with healthcare professionals regarding any changes or concerns.
- Meal Assistance: Help with meal preparation, feeding, and hydration. Take into account any dietary restrictions or specific nutritional needs. Ensure that the individual is comfortable during meals and assist with swallowing, if necessary.
