Autonomous practitioner providing quality orthoptic services to both out patients and in patients in two acute hospitals within Swansea Bay University Health Board.
The post holder will require highly skilled and specialised knowledge and testing techniques.
Orthoptists play a key role in managing eye conditions and see patients of all ages with a high percentage being younger than school age. The orthoptist will be involved in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting binocular vision, functional vision, and ocular motility as well as examining and interpreting visual fields. The orthoptist will also have an extended role in the area of medical retina, using specialist skills such as performing intravitreal injections for age related macular degeneration and diabetic macular oedema.
To take responsibility for the orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients referred directly to the orthoptic department from outside agencies and various departments within the organisation.
The caseload will include patients of all ages, including children with significant sight defects and adults with double vision or visual field loss.
Post holder will formulate individual treatment programmes, discharge plans and onward referrals, using clinical reasoning, evidence based practice and a wide range of treatment options.
To demonstrate clinical skills to junior doctors, student nurses, optometrists and other healthcare professionals, and teach orthoptic undergraduate students
To actively participate in audit and clinical governance, taking a lead on programs such as school vision screening.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
