We have an exciting opportunity for a Ward Sister/ Charge Nurse to join our team here on New Forrest Ward, for 34.5 hours per week. Here we specialise in Diabetes and Endocrinology mixed with acute general medicine.

We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative leader who has the ability to work across the 24-hour day, seven days a week. You will be providing day to day leadership to the Nursing team within the ward, acting as a role model at all times whilst ensuring patients are receiving high quality evidence-based care.

You will adopt a highly visible and accessible approach for patients, their carers and relatives, and all staff within the MDT alike. You will lead by example and help to empower staff in their personal and professional development. There is an expectation to work closely with the medical team and other agencies, to ensure patient care is given safely, promptly and appropriately, encouraging proactive discharge planning, and promoting maximum independence for patients.

The post holder will be expected to be innovative with ways of working, and will strive to offer ideas which will develop the service and which best fit the demands made upon the ward environment. You will be encouraged and supported to challenge working practices in order to become as efficient as possible, where you will utilise all learning opportunities and undertake supervision.

  • Act as an advocate for staff, patients and relatives at all times
  • To assist the Ward Manager in the management of unit resources- budget, staffing, annual leave etc.
  • To assist the ward manager in staff management- absences, annual achievement reviews etc.
  • Initiate and implement duty rotas ensuring adequate skill mix to meet the needs of the clinical area
  • To be honest and learn from mistakes, and help to create a “no-blame” culture were people feel able to share and learn from experiences together
  • To assist the ward manager but also develop own knowledge around governance and investigations
  • To assist the ward manager with interviews and selection of nursing staff as required and build and maintain a skilled, cohesive supportive and effective team
  • To participate in educating staff and to be an NMC Assessor for student nurses
  • To work as part of a team demonstrating effective communication, and working collaboratively with colleagues inside and out of the department
  • Be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that these are observed
  • Recognise patients changing condition and seek the appropriate support and advice from senior staff
  • Work collaboratively with the team to improve the general health and wellbeing of staff and patients
