The Royal Alexandra is a dedicated children's hospital located in Brighton overlooking the sea, next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
- In the absence of the Ward Manager, to be a visible and accessible presence on the ward to whom the staff, patients and their relatives/carers can turn to for assistance.
- To act as an expert for the care of a specified group of patients, providing effective leadership and acting as a positive role model
- To acknowledge own clinical limitations and refer issues out of own scope of practice to more experienced colleagues. To seek professional education or training to overcome these deficiencies
- To undertake appropriate training in venepuncture, cannulation and administration of intravenous therapy and undertake sufficient practice to become an assessor for other staff in the department
- With the Ward Manager, to take the lead in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care. To ensure that all patients have a plan of care which is individualised and evidence based and is in line with local policies and procedures. To ensure that the plan of care is regularly updated to reflect any change in the patients condition and that there is evidence of an evaluation of the effectiveness of the care given.
- Assist the Ward Manager to ensure that there is regular review of documentation practice and that focused action plans are developed when areas of concern are identified.
- To ensure that admissions, transfers and discharges are planned in accordance with Trust policy, liaising effectively with partner agencies to ensure best outcome for the patient.
- To be responsible for ensuring that there is adherence to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children protocols within clinical practice.
This is an opportunity to join our team as a Deputy Sister/ Charge Nurse in the Childrens Surgical ward at The royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital in Brighton.
The Royal Alexandra is a dedicated children's hospital located in Brighton overlooking the sea, next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The Children's Surgical ward has 12 funded beds and takes children under a range of specialities including ENT, general surgery, orthopaedics and max fax. We are a tertiary surgical centre and therefore undertake both emergency and elective procedures on patients between the ages of 0-17 years.
We have three dedicated paediatric theatres within the Royal Alexander Children's Hospital and elective surgical list run daily with emergency theatre provision at all times.
This is your opportunity to work within the children's surgical team and continue to develop your career. You will be working in a bright purpose built children's hospital with support from our own dedicated surgical paediatric education team. The Surgical Ward also has links with the South Thames Paediatric Network for surgery.
We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Successful applicant would need to have recent experience of caring for children undergoing surgery. They must be competent and comfortable in all areas of surgical care and ideally have some shift leading experience.
