This is a 1 year rotational post within the Orthopaedic Network across Barts Health with a minimum 6 months across The Royal London Hospital (RLH) and Newham University Hospital (NUH), and a minimum 6 months at Whipps Cross Hospital (WCH).

This unique opportunity offers exposure to the major trauma service, including complex adult and paediatric trauma, as well as the busy fragility fracture service, with exposure to large volumes of hip fractures. This role is designed to support those looking to progress to higher surgical training programmes in Trauma & Orthopaedics.

Newham University Hospital (NUH) is home to Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC) for elective care with 4 orthopaedic theatres, inpatient and day case wards. It is also a district general hospital which includes orthopaedic on-call.

Whipps Cross Hospital is the specialist Fragility Fracture Service at Bart’s Health and a busy district general hospital.

  • Contribution to emergency orthopaedic and trauma 'on call' service. You will liaise and work with the registrar on-call to clerk, admit patients from A&E, and take referrals from GP’s. Attendance at trauma calls. You will have support and supervision from the on-call Registrar and the on-call Consultant.
  • On-calls will be both day shifts from 8am to 8.30pm and night shifts from 8pm to 9am. This system is European Working Time Directive compliant.
  • Continuous care of orthopaedic in-patients. The post holder must work flexibly with your colleagues and share the workload. This includes cross covering for colleagues who are on nights, zero hour days or on leave.
  • Participation in ward activities and regular ward rounds with the appropriate Consultant. It is expected that the post holder will attend the elective out patient clinics, fracture clinics and theatre session whenever possible and training days are included in the rota for this activity to be supernumerary and protected.
  • All SHO’s at RLH are expected to attend daily trauma meeting at 8 am; this is an interactive meeting and an informal teaching opportunity. SHOs are expected to be to fully informed about patients that they have seen and assessed whilst on call.
