NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a Specimen Reception Supervisor for a part-time position (21.5 hours per week) based in Glasgow. This role is critical to the effective operation of the Immunology and Neuroimmunology department, which is the largest of its kind in Scotland. The supervisor will be responsible for a range of technical, administrative, and supervisory tasks, including training staff, managing day-to-day issues, organizing work rotas, and ensuring the proper handling and processing of clinical specimens. Essential qualifications include an HND or equivalent in a relevant field, alongside experience in laboratory reception and specimen handling.
Key responsibilities include operating the sample reception area efficiently, processing samples using laboratory information systems, and ensuring compliance with waste disposal protocols. The role also involves participating in departmental objectives and maintaining documentation related to specimen reception. A vacancy has arisen for a Specimen Reception Supervisor. You will carry out technical, administrative, supervisory and clerical tasks in addition to general specimen reception duties. Effective operation of the sample reception area is essential to the operation of the Department.
It Is Essential You Have The Minimum Qualifications Required
HND in relevant subject, or SVQ3 /HNC/SCQF Level 7/ IBMS Certificate of Achievement part II, or equivalent with additional theoretical or applied training equivalent to diploma level.
The Supervisory Duties Will Include But Not Limited To
Provide rotas for Reception staff
Attend meetings as the representative for Specimen Reception
Dealing with day to day issues as they arise
Training staff and carrying out competency assessments
Writing documents and updating existing documents relating to specimen reception
Working on the reception bench and covering gaps
Participate in delivery of departmental objectives
It is essential that candidates have experience of working in a laboratory reception. This will involve processing samples through specimen reception by preparing samples for analysis (including centrifugation) and safe disposal of clinical waste following defined protocols. You will book in specimens (PID) on laboratory Information System (Telepath) using bar code readers and keyboard entry and file request forms. You also be responsible for correct storage and retrieval of samples.
