Job Overview
To support registered nurses in delivering evidenced based care to patients within primary and secondary care across Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) will provide high quality, consistent and cost-effective health and social care for patients with both complex and non-complex needs. There will be an expectation for the HCSW to work within the Health Inclusion Service and across General Practice sites, nurse led clinics and health promotion initiatives as directed by Senior Nurse/ Lead nurse.
The post holder will work as part of a team that provides health care services to residents who are registered in a general practice within The Aneurin Bevan University Health board (ABUHB) area focusing on the direct needs of service users undergoing healthcare treatment. The post holder is expected to work within clinical competencies with supporting base knowledge. They will have completed a learning package at NVQ/QCF/CQFW level 3. They are expected to work within defined protocols, adhering to the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales under the appropriate delegation and close supervision of and reporting to a registered nurse.
Main duties of the job
To assist the Healthcare Team in the clinical assessment and management of patients presenting for healthcare needs within a primary care setting.
To undertake initial screening of new patients referred to the Health Inclusion service under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse.
Undertake health screening, testing and clinical observations as required and documented prior to a clinical sessions.
To be able to recognise normal range parameters of clinical testing and report to registered nurse when results out of protocol range.
Carry out direct care duties under the delegation of a registered nurse e.g. phlebotomy, physiological observations, sample testing, ECG.
To rotate as necessary between differing primary and community care establishments.
To establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external agencies, interacting with patients and all colleagues in a professional manner.
To implement care as planned and directed by the Registered Nurse, reporting any changes in the patient’s condition in a timely manner.
Please note: This post is 30 hours permanent, with an additional 7.5 hours fixed term for 12 months.

Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- NVQ/QCF/CQFW accreditation at Level 3
- Evidence of up to date mandatory ESR online training, e.g. Health and Safety, Safeguarding, BLS and Anaphylaxis etc.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
- Motivational interviewing or MECC brief intervention training
- Maths and English GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of undertaking a HCSW role
- Experience of undertaking clinical observations e.g. temperature, BP recording, clinical testing.
- Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams
Desirable criteria
- Experience of undertaking a HCSW role in a Primary and Secondary Care setting
- Experience of working with people who are socially vulnerable and are experiencing a decline in their mental health
