Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- To adhere to unit protocols and policies (e.g. cannulation, plaster application, wound care.) Including a good understanding of aseptic technique.
- To accurately monitor and record patients vital signs, reporting abnormalities to nursing or medical staff.
- To be actively involved in the assessment , planning, implementation and evaluation of a patient
- To correctly and safely procure and send off clinical specimens when required.
- Assist patients with Activities of daily living as required. Manage the care of Short Stay Unit patients with appropriate nursing supervision.
- To undertake and assist medical and nursing staff with procedures.
- To have a basic understanding of common presentations to the childrens emergency department and the importance of correct treatment and safety netting discharge advice.
- To support children who are unwell or injured while they are in CED. Ensuring that procedures and the delivery of care occurs in the most child friendly way.
- To undertake the expected clerical and reception duties including booking patients onto symphony and updating symphony as required. Performing safeguarding checks on the central spine.
- Inform the Nurse in charge of any potential hazard, accident, incident or patient problem that occurs. Also taking responsibility to document and report when appropriate.
- Ensure that the department is clean, tidy, well-stocked and linen and waste are correctly disposed of in accordance with trust policy.
- To have a good understanding of the resuscitation equipment and associated monitoring, with adequate training and experience to be able to support both medical and nursing staff during resuscitation.
- To assist in the creation and maintenance of a caring and safe play environment for children, teenager and their families.
- To encourage, support and ensure effective communication with patients, parents, carers, relatives and friends.
- To liaise and communicate with colleagues across the Trust using a variety of mediums.
- To advocate for children and young people to highlight their preferences or wishes while in the department.
- Contribute to the identification of areas for change and development.
- To adhere to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- To support children who are unwell or injured while they are in CED. Working alongside and under the direction of senior CED staff so that procedures and the delivery of care occurs in the most child friendly way.
Responsibility for ensuring that there are adequate and appropriate stocking of resources for use within the childrens emergency department.

- To participate in relevant internal learning opportunities, as well as ensuring all mandatory training is always up to date.
