York Steiner School is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Caretaker to oversee the maintenance and security of the school. This provides a great opportunity to work alongside a dedicated staff team supporting them with deliveries, cleaning, maintenance jobs, recycling and waste management, preparation of rooms (plays, fairs, open days etc).

Opening and lock up form an important element of this role and comprises a 2 week rotation (Monday to Friday), Locking up the school premises involves late nights as the school hires rooms out for use by the local community.


Key Accountabilities



General


  • Upkeep and general care of the school
  • Ensuring that external rubbish is stored appropriately and outside areas are kept clean and clear of debris etc.
  • Carrying out repairs to property, fixtures, fittings and equipment, which are not beyond the scope of an unskilled handyperson
  • Monitoring the premises for any hazards and reporting problems, where necessary
  • Directing contractors to the sites of repair and maintenance work and inspecting the work of contractors where there is a requirement to sign a satisfaction note.
  • Checking damage/security every morning on arrival at the premises
  • Preparation of Hall/ Rooms/School for functions and bookings as required
  • A minimum of 2 weekends to be worked each year for the school fairs (May and November)
  • Test fire alarms weekly. Maintain test register in absence of the Operations Manager
  • Carry out water temperature checks, Read Gas, Electric and Water metres as required
  • Assist the teaching staff with safeguarding pupils in the event of an incident (lockdown/evacuation)

  • Sweeping/salting and keeping clear school footpaths and car parks during the winter/early spring months
  • The nature of the post will involve some ongoing considerable physical effort, e.g. lifting or carrying of equipment, pushing or pulling items of moderate weight
  • Reporting any health and safety concerns to the Operations Manager, as soon as possible.
  • Taking reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others (staff and children)
  • Driving licence with access to a vehicle is desirable
  • 2 week rotation to open up and lock up the school premises which will involve early starts and late nights (Monday to Friday)

  • To build good working relationships with all the staff.
  • To work closely with the Operations Manager
  • Participate and attend staff training days/sessions and school open days.
  • Attendance at the school’s annual events (eg: Spring/Autumn Fairs etc)
  • Comply with all school policies and procedures

  • Follow the school’s behaviour policy when interacting with children
  • Report any safeguarding concerns in accordance with the schools safeguarding policy

Annual Leave:
28 days pro rata (inclusive of bank holidays) in the first year, 31 days pro rata in the second year before rising to 33 days pro rata after 3 years. There will be a 6 month probationary period.
