The role of Health Care Assistant (HCA) at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Southport involves supporting nursing staff and patients across various wards and departments. Successful candidates will work on a flexible schedule, covering all shifts across the week due to service demands. The HCA will perform direct care tasks under the supervision of registered nurses, assist in maintaining high standards of patient care, and contribute to a pleasant recovery environment for patients and their families. Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
Community Services
Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

- The post-holder will carry out assigned tasks involving direct care in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse.
- To support the qualified Nursing Staff in the maintenance of high standards of nursing care to patients.
- To assist in providing an environment within the ward that is conductive to patient recovery and pleasant for patients and their families.
- To accept responsibility for specifically delegated functions within the ward which the Nurse in Charge feels are appropriate for untrained staff to undertake.
- To ensure where entries are made in nursing documentation, that these are correct, legible and comprehensive and countersigned by a registered nurse.
- To understand and adhere to all Trust Policies.
- To ensure the Health and Safety of patients, relatives and other staff is considered and not prejudiced by the post-holder at any time.
