Job Overview
An opportunity has arisen for a temporary (23 month) Band 5 Assistant Psychologist post working in the neuro-oncology team within the paediatric psychology service at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Trust. The post is available on a 0.8 WTE basis (30 hours per week). This post would be ideal for applicants considering a future clinical or research career. Previous post holders have gone on to train in Clinical Psychology and in Medicine.
The Paediatric Health Psychology Service is a thriving department, which is committed to child and family centred care. There are opportunities for professional development through regular journal clubs and case discussion meetings. The Paediatric Health Psychology team is part of the wider Department of Psychology in Healthcare, enabling collaboration and support with adult psychology colleagues. There are also close links with the doctorate clinical psychology course at Newcastle and Teesside universities.

This post offers the opportunity for an experienced Assistant Psychologist to develop their skills further, gaining outpatient, inpatient, and research experience in a busy hospital setting. The paediatric neuro-oncology team is highly active in research. This post will support the lead psychologist in neuro-oncology with two main areas of research, and with clinical cases.
The post holder will be responsible (under supervision) to engage in the following tasks, amongst others:
- Administration of neuropsychology assessments to children (WISC V, WPPSI IV, and similar) and report writing.
- Database entry of clinical and research data (Excel).
- Preparation and presentation of reports based on research data.
- Providing appropriate therapy to children and parents.
- Organisation and booking of a monthly clinic for children receiving medication.
- Support with recruitment and appointing of patients, siblings, and family members to online group sessions.
- Supporting the running of groups led by a Clinical Psychologist.
The role requires good time management skills, the ability to form good relationships with children and adults, and the ability to balance competing clinical and research priorities (under supervision). Previous employment as an Assistant Psychologist is not essential, and the ability to meet the requirements of the post can be evidenced via many other roles.
