The Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education at St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton is a fixed-term position suitable for doctors who have completed or are currently undergoing foundation training (FY2) or Core Trainees (CT1 - CT3). It is also open to Specialty Grade Doctors (ST4 - ST6) looking for a break to gain broader experience. The role combines clinical and educational responsibilities, including supervising and teaching medical students, and offers substantial opportunities for professional development in a supportive academic environment. The fellow will participate in a structured program of teaching, clinical activities, and will have time allocated for pursuing a funded Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education.
The position provides an enriching experience in a multidisciplinary mental health setting, with access to expert colleagues, research opportunities, and a comprehensive support system. Located within 150 acres of woodland, the role promotes the values of compassion, accountability, respect, and excellence, aimed at making a meaningful impact on both patient care and medical education. Fixed term: One year with potential to renew for second year
Eligible applicants: doctors who have completed or are currently undertaking foundation training FY2 (not yet core) and core trainees CT1 – CT3. It would also suit someone at Specialty Grade Doctor ST4 – ST6 grade looking to take a year out of training to gain broader experience to help decide route / specialism of their career or someone wanting a year out before moving up to consultant level role. It could also appeal to someone looking for a LAS post as well as having the potential to be fully supported to undertake a funded Pg.Cert. in Medical Education.
You will work with some industry experts within psychiatry as well as teaching who are passionate about passing on their knowledge and developing others, whilst working in the newly refurbished academic centre based in over 150 acres of beautiful woodlands consisting of a gym, swimming pool, café, garden centre as well as other great facilities all open and free to access for staff.

Applications are invited for posts of Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education. These unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening clinical experience in a specialist, mental health setting.
In the coming year, the Academic Department will be supporting more than 500 student placements, across medicine, nursing, health and social care. There will be considerable opportunities for clinical teaching and educational activity.
The Clinical Teaching Fellowships are bespoke posts, tailored to interests and career intentions:
Four sessions are protected for educational activity where you will get involved in facilitating the education experience of third year students from the University of Buckingham which involves preparing and teaching educational workshops, assessing student’s case presentations and offering pastoral support to students. Also opportunities for teaching Cambridge Medical students.
Six sessions for clinical activity (with regular, consistent supervision for both elements) as a Ward Doctor on various wards based at St Andrews Northampton site. Your experience here will be similar to a core trainee and will help you gain some valuable experience working within the different wards which will help you in your future career.
You will be actively involved in supporting medical student placements. One day per week will focus on clinical teaching with students on the wards. The second day will be focused on facilitating small group workshop type sessions in the Academic Department. Study leave will be available for contact days for the PG.Cert course.
