The Healthcare Assistant for the Elective Surgery Ward at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust will work alongside a multidisciplinary team to support daily operations in the ward. Key responsibilities include admitting patients, reviewing pre-assessments, assisting in pre-and post-operative care, and ensuring patients are prepared for surgery. The role also entails maintaining a clean environment, conducting daily cleaning schedules, handling linen, and facilitating effective communication with patients and staff.

The successful candidate will work with the multidisciplinary team on the elective surgery ward assisting the ward staff in the day-to-day work of the department. The role requires empathy, good communication and the ability to work under pressure.

- Help admit patients reviewing pre-assessments and completing various pathways.
- Direct patients to various other departments for any investigations required prior to consultation.
- Take patients to theatre.
- Provide pre-and post-op care for patient in a professional, respectful confident manner.
- Ensure all patients are ready for theatre, concentrating on patients first on the list.
- Recording of pregnancy tests.
- Daily cleaning schedule including consulting rooms/oxygen and suction checks.
- Ordering of linen.
- Tidying and preparation of the examination rooms and ward area.
- Maintain a clean environment with associated cleaning duties.
- To provide patient care following procedures in theatre, including patient observations.
- Be able to recognise and report to the appropriate person the patients condition which may require intervention of others
- Provide diet and fluids to patients when appropriate to do so.
- Catheter care, including irrigation.
- Assist patients get up from trolleys safely to get dressed.
- Ensure to remove linen and clean trolleys following discharge of patients.
- Removal of cannulas when safe to do so.
- Dealing with telephone calls in a pleasant and courteous manner
- Awareness of public user involvement in the service we provide.
- Prepare for the next days theatre lists.
- Set up admission areas in ward for the next day.

- To undertake departmental training re Manual Handling and adhere to principals taught.
- To follow Health and Safety policies relevant to the operating department and attend mandatory updates in accordance with Trust policy.
- Undertake duties that you have received appropriate training for and have been deemed competent.
- To adhere to Trust policies and procedures
- To establish and maintain effective communication and relationships with multidisciplinary team within the operating department.
- Contribute to the development of the department, through contribution of new ideas to improve patient care/experience.
- Attend regular team meetings.
- To be compliant with health and safety infection control and manual handling policies.
- Disposal of rubbish and clinical waste in accordance with the appropriate policies.
- Ensure to report faulty equipment to estates department.
- Undertake all such reasonable other duties as may be required as part of the role.
