Specific entry requirements for Oxford Brookes University

Access to the SCPHN course is open to practitioners who meet the following criteria:

  • This course is at level 7 (masters degree) therefore evidence is required of recent study at level 6 (degree level).


You must:

  • be registered on either the nursing or midwife (parts one or two of the NMC register) prior to the course start date
  • be able to demonstrate evidence of recent study at level 6 on entry

Please note that clinical placements are limited, we do try to match you to the most suitable base and take into consideration where you live and caring responsibilities. We currently have one student school nurse place in Arundel. West Sussex


We will offer you:

  • A dedicated Practice supervisor, Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor for the duration of the course
  • A high level of support with regular meetings and opportunities to discuss your progress and learning needs
  • Support from the wider Practice Educator team
  • Group supervision sessions during consolidation
  • A trust that offers a wide range of support and benefits for its staff including; a Diversity & Inclusion Team, a Disability and Wellbeing Network, and a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Service

Sussex Community Foundation NHS trust is offering an exciting opportunity to undertake a fully funded sponsorship to qualify as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - School Nurse. This course will be offered full time at level 7 (Post Graduate Diploma), via online learning through Oxford Brookes University*. There is no requirement to attend Oxford Brookes University in person.

Clinical placements are available at our school nurses base at Arundel West Sussex, for those currently residing or relocating within the service localities prior to course commencement.

School nurses and health visitors lead the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) in Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. School Nurses work with children aged between 5 and 19 to identify and assess their health needs, then offer support to ensure that the child's health needs are met.

School Nurses have contact with children and young people in schools, homes, community venues and virtually from school entry to school leavers. We are looking for an enthusiastic registered nurse or midwife who is passionate about improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities for children and young people.

As a student, you will be an adult learner and this requires you to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, resilient and dedicated to the role, with a keen interest in public health, and as a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) you will be leading the Healthy Child Programme .

You will have a passion for public health and improving outcomes for children through progressive universalism and early intervention. We are looking for a solution-focused nurse or midwife that is able to demonstrate an understanding of holistic assessment, and the wider determinants of health and capacity building. You will need to have excellent communication skills and some experience of working collaboratively with other agencies.
