This is a joint post between the pharmacy team at University Hospitals Plymouth (Derriford Hospital) and the University of Bath (based at the University of Plymouth).

The new school of pharmacy at the University of Plymouth is now launched. The university is taking their first cohort of students from Sept 2024 and will be delivering the highly regarded University of Bath MPharm degree. The pharmacy teaching is patient-focussed via excellent links with local and regional employers and this post seeks to complement this. This post will deliver on the new MPharm programme and will also work with the Head of Pharmacy to support the teaching and learning of our students in the practice setting. This post is intended to make a significant contribution to teaching capacity in Pharmacyduring their University time.

To support and deputise for the Lead Pharmacist for Education and Training in the delivery of the education and training strategy.

To work in collaboration with designated supervisors, designated prescribing practitioners, system partners and non-medical prescribers to define a clear vision and sustainable pathway for trainee pharmacists to achieve prescribing competencies from 2025 onwards.

To work together with the education and training teams, internally and externally, to teach, develop and supervise less experienced colleagues, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and other students.

To engage proactively with the research agenda and ambitions of the pharmacy department.

To design and deliver high quality teaching, informed by significant professional experience gained via practice, research/study and teaching experience, to undergraduate students on the new MPharm programme - to include lectures, workshops, applied pharmacy practice skills sessions and supervision of dissertations or projects, assessment and marking and pastoral care of students, in line with Department/School and University policy.

To carry out a significant role in the design, development and delivery of teaching and learning in the department of pharmacy and pharmacology.

To contribute effectively to university wide developments and innovation in the design and delivery of teaching. This may include participation in professional accreditation activities where necessary.

To deliver on-going developmental, education and training programs for all pharmacy staff.

Designing and implementing appropriate teaching, learning and assessment plans to support trainee pharmacists, in line with local, regional and national agendas.

Provide educational or practice supervision for all trainees as required.

Support others to deliver on training curriculums in their roles as educational or practice supervisors.

Develop or maintain partnerships with higher education institutes.

Develop or maintain partnership with regional and local organisations to advance the education and training strategy.

To support in education and training of non-pharmacy staff within the organisation

To deputise for the Lead Pharmacist for Education and Training where required

Work as a clinical pharmacist if appropriate providing a service to a defined cohort of patients

To undertake a clinical area of responsibility as part of enabling non-medical prescribing training and to maintain own clinical competence.

Where required, act as a designated prescribing practitioner for trainee pharmacists from September 2025 onwards.

To support in the promotion of pharmacy and pharmacy careers to external organisations

Line manages designated pharmacists, trainee pharmacists or other members of the pharmacy team.

Undertake audits and engage with Quality Improvement and practice research projects

As a Practice Educator, work within realms of specialist therapeutic knowledge and experience and teach therapeutic topics as well general areas of pharmacy practice, as applicable

The post holder will contribute to teaching on the new University of Bath MPharm delivered at the University of Plymouth:

Practice Educators will work in two different workplaces: clinical pharmacy practice (hospital) and the University of Plymouth campus. To make this arrangement work there is recognition from both workplaces of the for flexibility. The university workload is driven by term dates and the preferred arrangement is for Practice Educators to work the equivalent of 0.5 WTE on the following basis:- 3 days a week during term time- 2 days a week outside of term time

Most of the teaching is timetabled for 9am 5pm but may be timetabled up until 7pm. Therefore, Practice Educators will need to be available between 9am and 5pm with occasional flexible working to cover timetabled late sessions.

Annual leave should be taken outside of term time where possible.
