The Specialist Biomedical Scientist (XR06) role at Leeds Teaching Hospitals involves working within the Microbiology department as part of the transition to a new, state-of-the-art laboratory facility. Located initially at Leeds General Infirmary and set to move to St James University Hospital in 2024/25, the position requires applicants to have extensive specialist knowledge and HCPC registration, as well as an IBMS specialist portfolio in microbiology if registered after 2006. The role entails performing complex technical procedures in Bacteriology, with rotations in Mycology and Environmental Laboratories, while contributing to patient diagnosis through examination of infection samples.

As a band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist, the successful candidate will supervise other staff, manage workflows, participate in quality control, and provide technical authorisation of results. In addition, they will engage in service development and training, while ensuring adherence to departmental policies and quality management systems. The position involves a commitment to ongoing professional development, with opportunities for further educational funding provided by the charity partner Leeds Cares. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work independently, and the readiness to participate in a 24/7 service delivery rota.
