Preferred Start Date 05-Feb-2025 (negotiable)
We invite candidates to apply for the position of Senior Registrar in Critical Care, with an interest in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine. This is a 6-month post (potentially extendable to 12-months), based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH) working within Anaesthetic and Critical Care Service supporting one of the largest Peritoneal Malignancy units in the world.
This is an excellent opportunity to be embedded in a large tertiary surgical service and to further skills in the perioperative care of major surgical patients. The successful applicant would be expected to deliver full on call pattern within Critical Care and then an even split between Anaesthetics and Critical Care for the remainder of the shifts. Anaesthetic shifts will exclusively be in either Peritoneal Malignancy or Hepatobiliary theatres. Applicants can expect to gain experience in managing these patients at all points in the perioperative journey. From a practical procedures point of view the vast majority of these patients receive thoracic epidurals, and full invasive monitoring including subclavian CVC lines.
There are also opportunities to learn and develop ultrasound skills alongside experienced trainers in FUSIC Heart, and Lung modules.
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the clinical supervisor. The clinical duties will include those normally expected of a Clinical Fellow in a Critical Care unit of any general hospital in the United Kingdom. Resident on-call availability is required, which is supported by a dedicated consultant support from home. The working pattern is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Total direct clinical care hours averaged over 6 weeks will not exceed 48 hours per week. Prospective cover for colleagues' annual leave is required. There is potential for working more or less than this to suit individual circumstances.
In daytime hours the role will be split between theatres and Critical Care.
About usThe successful applicant will be expected to:
Provide daily assessment and management of ICU/HDU patients as directed by the senior clinical team.
Performing invasive procedures, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, chest drains and lumbar punctures, all under supervision until competent.
Attending cardiac arrest, emergency & trauma calls.
Reviewing critical care referrals from the emergency department, theatres and wards, and liaising with admitting team.
Learning, developing and applying ultrasound skills in critical care.
BNHH has 18 critical care beds and receives over 1,000 critical care admissions each year. We routinely manage complex surgical patients, as the hospital is a tertiary referral centre for peritoneal malignancy surgery and resectional hepatobiliary work. We also manage complex cardiology patients, as the hospital is the Trust hub for cardiology, with a 24/7 PPCI service.
The Trust is keen to attract the highest calibre of trainee doctors. It realises that to maintain that aim for the future the quality of teaching and training must be of the highest order. Consultant staff are responsible for the training and supervision of all junior medical staff and time is expected to be regularly allocated to their teaching.
