Band Consultant: Depending on experience  PERMANENT  GOOD SALARY 

This is a substantive replacement tertiary endocrine consultant NHS post undertaking 10 PAs per week.

We invite applicants for an enthusiastic Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist to join one of the largest Paediatric Endocrine departments in the UK. We are a progressive forward- thinking team and a highly research active department, providing tertiary endocrine care in addition to 5 highly specialised funded services, and leadership of over 10 national and international clinical studies. The applicant will deliver, with the existing team, the highly specialised Rare Diabetes services, in addition to general endocrinology and type 1 and type 2 Diabetes clinics. We work in close partnership with specialised adult endocrine, bone and diabetes services in Birmingham. This post arises as a replacement post following the planned retirement of a senior colleague. Training and interest in Rare Diabetes would be desirable. This is a 10 PA post including 2 SPA, with a 1 in 5.5 on call commitment for Endocrinology and Diabetes.

Applicants must be eligible for full registration to practice with the GMC and hold or be within 4 months of CCST or equivalent in Paediatric Endocrinology.

The primary purpose of this post is to provide endocrine and diabetes clinical services for inpatients and outpatients and, together with the existing team, to deliver the highly specialised National Rare Diabetes services, initially for Bardet Biedl and Alstrom syndrome. The successful candidate will also support our existing sub-specialty services. Care provision includes supporting all aspects of intensified diabetes management, including insulin pump management (CSII) with hybrid closed loop (HCL), education sessions and HbA1c target clinics with extra support for children and young people.

There is recognition within the department and desire to be innovative and implement new practices to ensure our diabetes and endocrine care continues to compare to the best standards in Europe.

The appointee is expected to be tertiary trained in paediatric endocrinology & diabetes and have an excellent, practical knowledge of paediatric diabetes management and education including dietary management, CSII and HCL therapy as well as advanced glucose monitoring technologies. Experience in the care for children with rare forms of diabetes would be beneficial.

Clinically, he or she will share in the provision of the outpatient service for Endocrinology and Diabetes and provide inpatient advice, as well as regional and supra-regional advice when requested.

The post will deliver secondary and tertiary endocrine services, on site with a combination of virtual and face to face clinics and inpatient care, in addition to endocrine outreach services. Specifically the post holder will contribute to the delivery of the National Rare Diabetes service at Birmingham Childrens Hospital.

There are 8.0 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PAs and 2.0 supporting professional activities (SPA).

For newly appointed consultants within their first-year post CCST 0.25PA of clinical care will be replaced with 0.25PA of SPA to aid in adjustment to the role. We seek to employ a dedicated, tertiary trained paediatric endocrinologist who will work with the existing team.

There is a 1: 5.5 on call commitment for endocrinology & diabetes.
