Band 7- Lead Midwife for Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections
37.5 hours per week
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the maternity team at The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as our Lead Midwife for Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections
The post holder will ensure effective communication throughout the multidisciplinary team and support a positive safety culture. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role.

This is a new role and as our lead midwife for Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections you will:
Lead coordination of Induction of Labour and Planned Caesarean Sections to maintain patient safety and flow through the service.
Ensure safe, efficient and effective service user flow, whilst ensuring optimal bed utilisation through co-ordination of admissions.
Plan, coordinate and facilitate induction of labour workshops for women, birthing people and their families.
Plan, coordinate and facilitate planned caesarean section workshops for women, birthing people and their families.
Support quality improvement work related to induction of labour and planned caesarean sections.
Work clinically supporting women and birthing people who have a planned admission.
The post holder will inspire confidence and innovation amongst our incredible workforce, who together, ensure the women/birthing people and staff are safe, cared for and listened too. They will work collaboratively with the clinical maternity teams, maternity managers, governance and education teams to provide seamless pathways of care and ensure a positive safety and team culture.

Main duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:

To spend 50% of time clinically facing. This will include supporting the daily planned caesarean section lists and working clinically on the antenatal ward supporting induction of labour.

To review referrals and ensure timely appointments for induction of labour and planned caesarean sections as the midwifery lead within the multidisciplinary team and liaise with women and birthing people regarding their admission.

To prioritise inductions of labour and planned caesarean sections in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
-
To identify, analyse, and interpret facts and information to ensure the management of a woman and birthing people is in accordance with risk throughout their pregnancy journey.
-
To coordinate induction of labour and planned caesarean section daily and optimise capacity whilst ensuring a safe environment for women and birthing people and their families. This will include the development and communication of plans for IOL to women and birthing people and the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).

To plan, coordinate and facilitate induction of labour workshops for women, birthing people and their families.

To plan, coordinate and facilitate planned caesarean section workshops for women, birthing people and their families.

To attend any meetings appropriate to the post holders role, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions to be undertaken and applications of recommendations. Meetings may include the multidisciplinary labour ward handovers, safety huddles and Trust bed meetings.

To refer women and birthing people to other practitioners when needs and risks are beyond ones own scope of practice.

To contribute to supporting and nurturing student midwives education and professional development by acting as a practice supervisor/assessor.

To support women and birthing people, encouraging them to promote their own health and wellbeing and that of their baby and to express their interests and concerns.

To support service users in their patient journey through the service by ensuring clear lines of communication and advise is provided around any potential delays and act as a contact for women and birthing people to raise concerns.

To support, develop and deliver safe, effective and outstanding care for women and birthing people and their families.
Professional:

To always act as a positive senior midwifery leader-ambassador by providing helpful and professional clinical and non-clinical support to all on-site staff, families and visitors.

To display a mature approach to challenging situations, including unexpected situations, including complex communication, such as delivering sensitive news.

Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice and care through a variety of ways, for example, audit.

Practice within the policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines agreed by the Trust.
Management:
-
To maintain up to date information on induction of labour and planned caesarean sections and anticipated admissions within the clinical areas to drive patient safety and efficient use of staff and resources.

To coordinate the booking of all induction of labours and planned caesarean sections for women and birthing people.
-
To inform the Labour Ward and Maternity Triage Manager and Head of Midwifery when there is disparity between existing bed capacity and the placement of planned admissions with onward escalation to the Director of Midwifery as appropriate.
-
Using escalation guidance, work in collaboration with Labour Ward and Maternity Triage Manager and Head of Midwifery when there are rising capacity pressures.
-
To address any verbal complaints received from women and birthing people and their families in real time and attempt to resolve these at a local level when a verbal complaint is being presented.

To design and develop project plans for quality improvements and service developments both in the provider site and across the LMNS as required.
-
To write and/or contribute to relevant reports as required.
-
To make sure recommendations from national guidelines, policies and strategies are consistently included in local practice.
-
To ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
Governance:
-
To participate in audits and quality improvement programmes in accordance with change management.
-
To support and participate in guideline/SOP development as required.
-
To demonstrate a shared responsibility for ensuring that key recommendations from serious incidents are effectively implemented and learning gets to the maternity staff delivering care.
-
To participate in clinical or other levels of audit to aid service evaluation and development.
-
To ensure clinical incident reporting takes place and facilitate changes to reduce risk.
-
Have a clear understanding and ability to implement principles of Information Governance and how to manage situations where this may be breached.
Leadership:

To work collaboratively with the senior team to implement, deliver and evaluate effective capacity and flow through the maternity inpatients services.

To collaborate with the Senior Midwifery and Operational Teams to ensure the delivery of high standards of clinical care.
-
To maintain, monitor and evaluate standards of care within the midwifery team and to assist in the implementation of recommendations from Government or Professional bodies and CQC Regulations in relation to maternity care.

To assist in the development of health and safety standards and the monitoring of these standards, ensuring that Trust Policies are adhered to, and equipment is used correctly and in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work act.

To communicate and undertake sensitive conversations with women and birthing people and their families such as around delays in induction of labour and where transfer to alternative units may be recommended but not readily accepted and delays or cancellation of planned caesarean sections.

To provide specialised advice and support to women and birthing people through their admission.

Communicate and liaise with the multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to promote effective and quality care ensuring that confidentiality is respected at all times.

Contributes to systems in place to proactively disseminate information, e.g. team briefings, ward / departmental meetings, so that staff are kept informed.
