Specialist Speech & Language Therapist - Development opportunity with The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust in Wakefield, West Yorkshire
We have a great opportunity at MYTT to welcome a new band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) in to our busy acute service via our band 5-6 development framework. Prospective candidates are welcome to visit or discuss further. You will have completed NQSLT competencies and be working autonomously with a dysphagia caseload. This is a career enhancing opportunity for an experienced, suitably qualified, skilled and dynamic SLT. The post holder is required to be an autonomous and motivated individual who is keen to further their skills and development through self-led learning and reflection. The post holder will work with a team of talented SLTs and the clinical lead who will provide day to day line management, support and monthly supervision. We have weekly complex case review meetings, MDT presence, and joint working opportunities. Our patients access VF clinic and we have a FEES service in development that is currently accepting a small number of referrals. Patients can be referred to our own community SLT service. We also have strong links with neighbouring community Trusts. We have an established and experienced SLT leadership team consisting of a SLT Service Lead, SLT Team Lead and a range of Clinical Leads who specialise across stroke, ICU and respiratory, LTC, dementia and elderly, H&N, voice and community specialisms. Interviews will be held 06 December 2024. The post holder will work across a range of wards at Pinderfields Hospital and Dewsbury & District Hospital; including frailty, dementia, respiratory, spinals, oncology and admissions for example; providing a great opportunity to work with a range of conditions and MDT experiences. The post holder will provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review, and onward referral of patients, who have dementia, cancer, respiratory disease, neurological conditions or other conditions which cause swallow and communication impairments. The post holder will engage with huddles and regular clinical and service meetings to optimise patient care. The post holder will develop their leadership, professional and specialist clinical skills and knowledge through a supported and structured framework with a view to converting to full band 6 SLT duties within 6-11 months. Our band 6 SLT colleagues' role include clinical prioritisation and caseload oversight, finding solutions and identifying areas for improvement, providing specialist level clinical advice and guidance to colleagues and the MDT, supervising and supporting junior colleagues and students and leading with or contributing to service developments, SOPs and audits, plus developing and providing Trust wide training. All SLT colleagues in the team receive ringfenced time for MAST and CPD, plus access to regular supervision. About us Key Responsibilities To demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge and skills in order to provide a high quality clinical service to adults with acquired disorders of communication and swallowing. To demonstrate effective caseload management skills. To work flexibly across the key client groups, as required, to provide and maintain a responsive, client centred service. To work within a multi- disciplinary framework, making a core contribution to the management of swallowing and communication and promoting the profile of Speech and Language Therapy. To maintain effective liaison systems with others. In e.g. Health, Social Care, service user groups and voluntary agencies. To use a range of media; spoken, printed & electronic, to ensure the appropriate dissemination of information regarding clients management. To attend multi- disciplinary case conferences, ward rounds and other meetings.eg. family meetings, goal setting and discharge planning meetings. To maintain an informed, patient centred and proactive approach to client management, e.g. by signposting or providing information about other agencies or resources which may be beneficial to clients, their families or carers. To provide direct and indirect clinical support and advice to Speech and Language Therapists and other colleagues in the multi- disciplinary team. To contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of training for Speech and Language Therapists, other professionals, voluntary agencies and client and carer groups. To provide, as required, clinical education for speech and language therapy students and supervision for students from other disciplines. To inform senior speech and language therapy colleagues e.g. Team Leads, of any issues relating to service planning or delivery, e.g. variations in workload, referral patterns, equipment needs. To take appropriate responsibility for the security, care and maintenance of equipment, including equipment loaned to clients. To be proactive in clinical governance. To contribute to the use and further development of evidence based practice. To contribute to the development of clinical care pathways and policies. To maintain and develop links with other speech and language therapists by attending relevant CENs. To attend Speech and Language Therapy departmental meetings and other team meetings as required. To demonstrate continuing professional development (CPD). To collect and submit timely and appropriate caseload data to the Trusts information systems. To adhere to the core responsibilities of Speech and Language Therapists as defined by the Health Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
