The Biomedical Support Worker - Microbiology position at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital involves working in the county's sole Microbiology laboratory, delivering essential clinical diagnostic services across three Trusts in Norfolk. The role requires the candidate to perform routine laboratory procedures under the supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientists, which includes preparing and processing clinical materials, running automated analysers, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Previous laboratory experience is preferred to ensure a smooth integration into the dynamic team, which emphasises staff wellbeing and teamwork.

The position involves working a varied shift pattern from Monday to Sunday, with responsibilities such as labeling and preparing patient samples for analysis and assisting with microscopy and culture processes. Ongoing training and professional development are required, along with collaboration with other team members to meet departmental goals. EPA Microbiology is the only Microbiology laboratory in the county! We provide clinical diagnostic services across Norfolk including 3 separate Trusts. This busy, exciting and essential service is run by an efficient and closely knit team, and the laboratory is very focused on staff wellbeing and teamwork. We would love to get someone recruited who will integrate well into this dynamic, with previous lab experience to help you hit the ground running and also contribute to improving the service.

Staff will be expected to participate in the departmental rota. We work Monday to Friday on 3 shifts - early (8am-4pm) core (9am-5pm) and late (12pm-8pm), and on 8am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Performing routine laboratory procedures in all areas of the Bacteriology Laboratory according to laboratory policies and Standard Operating.

Procedures under supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientist staff.

Working across all areas of the laboratory to prepare and process clinical material for testing, run automated analysers, participate in quality improvement and train other staff.

Complete ongoing service training including CPD.

Work with other team members to plan workload and achieve collective goals.

About us
1. To prepare and process all types of clinical material for microscopy and culture (except those processed at Containment Level 3).

2. Labelling and preparing patients blood, urine and other fluids for analysis utilising aseptic techniques.

3. To prepare samples for Mycology microscopy and culture.

4. To prepare samples for testing and to assist the Biomedical Scientists.
