We are looking for an Adviser to join NHS Resolutions Practitioner Performance Advice (Advice) team as we work to promote a fair and just culture across the NHS. Our service provides independent, expert advice and support to healthcare organisations, as well as medical, dental, and pharmacy practitioners.
If you have experience managing performance concerns and a commitment to fair resolution, we encourage you to apply. We seek applicants with extensive experience in healthcare and professional backgrounds in areas like medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, employment law, defence, professional bodies, regulatory work or HR.
Applicants should have experience in the management of performance concerns in primary care, be that under Performers List Regulations or local policies. Applicants with experience in Maintaining High Professional Standards (MHPS) framework would also be welcome to apply.
We welcome applications from underrepresented groups, those seeking flexible hours (minimum 22.5 per week), as well as fixed-term and secondment arrangements.
This role is part of a broader programme of service improvement that may impact our structure, yet this key position will support these changes.
For further details, please contact Dr. Sally Pearson, Interim Head of Case Advice, at or Karen Wadman, Case Advice Technical Lead, at
The Adviser role is integral to our Advice service, supporting ECOs in handling performance concerns about doctors, dentists, and pharmacists, with a commitment to fostering a fair and just culture in healthcare. Advisers utilise expert critical thinking and analytical skills to assess concerns, drawing on national regulations, frameworks, and local context to provide informed guidance. Although they primarily interact with ECOs, Advisers remain impartial, engaging all parties to encourage fair resolutions and challenging approaches where necessary.
Advisers offer comprehensive guidance on case handling, referencing frameworks like Maintaining High Professional Standards in the modern NHS, and implement interventions, such team reviews, to address relationship issues or clarify performance concerns. They also lead educational programs, like case investigation and case manager.
Internally, Advisers foster peer support and development, continuous improvement and ensure consistent, quality services. They build strong regional partnerships with ECOs and other relevant stakeholders.
Other responsibilities include managing a caseload within a defined job plan, peer reviewing cases, handling complex cases, and providing timely, written case summaries. Advisers deliver training on various topics, engage with ECOs on service use, and participate in operational meetings and other projects, all the while seeking to improve and promote the Advice service.
