Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses of GP colleagues as appropriate.
We are looking for a Practice Nurse in a GP surgery in Orpington Kent. Our practice aims to provide excellent quality care to our patients while supporting and developing our staff.
We are looking for a passionate and motivated nurse who has excellent communications skills, experience in Chronic Disease management who wants to work within an amazing, innovative multi-disciplinary team.
The ideal candidate will work as an integral part of the Primary Health Care Team. Working autonomously with our patients within the surgery and our practice community. This role is varied and covers all aspects of general practice nursing duties. The ideal candidates must be a team player able to adapt to changing work practices and be flexible to cover sickness and holidays. The ideal candidates must have attention to detail as accuracy is a key requirement of the role. You must also have excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
Main duties of the job
- Womens health (cervical cytology, contraception, etc.)
- Wound care and dressings
- Chronic disease management (COPD, Diabetes, CHD & Asthma)
- Routine and child immunisations and vaccines
- ECGs & 24hr BP monitoring
- Hypertension management
- Travel vaccinations
- Requesting pathology tests and processing the results, advising patients accordingly
- Knowledge and understanding of QOF
- Knowledge and experience of working within the framework of Locally Commissioned Services and Direct Enhanced Services
- Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required ie: GSF, ICN, staff meetings
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses of GP colleagues as appropriate

- Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GP
- Cytology
- Wound care
- Removal of Sutures
- Travel Clinic
- Perform ECG recordings and present results to the requester.
- Asthma/Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry
- To undertake chronic disease management (ie asthma, COPD) within Practice protocols, including monitoring progress, response to treatment.
- Hypertension Management
- Routine immunisations/Childhood immunisations and ensure vaccines are administered under patient group directions.
- Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
- Assisting GPs with LARC clinics if necessary
- Administer depo injections and carry out pill checks.
- Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
- Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
- At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
- A duty to advise senior nurses of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
- Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required.
- On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits
- Anything else that is custom and practice to enable the smooth running of the Practice
Other Responsibilities
- Recognise and work within own competence and in accordance with the national and local guidelines Produce accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultation, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies and guidelines
- Reporting on Significant Events
- Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation
- Participate in regular staff training sessions to ensure development of skills and knowledge; to assess own learning needs and undertake learning as appropriate.
- Participate in clinical, multi-disciplinary and whole team meetings.
- Observe and comply with all appropriate statutory requirements in relation to Child and Adult Safeguarding and to be familiar with the reporting process should this be required.
- Attending training where appropriate.
