The post holder will also provide nursing leadership for implementation and evaluation of all education, training and development of staff.They will develop, implement and evaluate policies, guidelines and protocols for the management of patients attending the clinical area in conjunction with the specialist MDT team.


Ward Manager Osterley 1, Band 7

To be responsible for the overall management of the clinical area, Osterley 1 ward and the professional development of staff within Planned Cared Division.

The Ward Manager will provide advice and support to the whole multidisciplinary team in caring for patients. The Ward Manager will be expected to maintain high standards of care and be accountable for auditing those standards. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining a suitable and safe environment for patients and staff. On occasions, the post holder will deputise for the Matron in their absence.

The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership and professional development for the nursing and support workers within the clinical area. They will provide professional advice and support to the whole multidisciplinary team in caring for patients. The post holder will also provide nursing leadership for implementation and evaluation of all education, training and development of staff. They will develop, implement and evaluate policies, guidelines and protocols for the management of patients attending the clinical area in conjunction with the specialist MDT teams.

The post holder will aim to ensure that all patients are provided with a safe and high quality standard of care. The post holder will work closely with the Centre for Professional Learning and Clinical Skills Teams to provide teaching/learning support in agreed areas of clinical expertise.

The post holder will aim to ensure that all patients are provided with a safe and high quality standard of care. They will be aware of the Care Quality Commission and work with the multidisciplinary team ensuring that they are maintained.

Management
:

1. To be responsible for the provision of nursing care on the ward 24 hour a day.

2. Recruit and retain a workforce qualified to meet the needs of the patients in that area. This may include nursing staff, support workers, administrative staff, and housekeeping staff.

3. Manage ward staffing day to day to ensure effective use of resources. This includes responsibility for the duty rotas, annual and study leave, bank and agency usage.

4. Ensure that all staff in the area undergoes an annual appraisal and have a personal development plan (PDP). Collate all staffs PDPs in order to identify and plan the educational needs of the area.

5. Identify and investigate any issues of conduct, discipline and performance within your team, in accordance with trust policies and procedures, in liaison with the Divisional Matron.

6. Maintaining the area budget (pay and non-pay) within the agreed budget. Report and investigate any deviation from this position (both deficits and surpluses). Also to deliver savings and efficiencies in line with the Trusts objectives.

7. Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with the Divisional Risk Manager and Matron.

8. Collect data and provide essential information in a timely and accurate manner as requested by the directorate and trust management teams. This could include dependency studies, manpower and a variety of audits.

9. To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies and procedures and in liaison with the pharmacy team.

10. Ensure the areas team is aware of trust policies and procedures and know how to access the latest versions. Disseminate any changes in policy and procedures in a timely manner. Work within these policies.

11. To participate in meetings and project work as identified and delegated by the Matrons, Service Managers and Divisional Nurse.

12. Deputise and act up for the Matron if required.

13. To investigate and respond to informal and formal complaints in a timely manner encouraging an open and learning environment.

14. To monitor all incidents that occur within the clinical area undertaking root cause analysis as required. To manage any changes in practice or learning identified through incident reviews.


Clinical/Professional role
:

1. To act as a role model of expert clinical practice in the specialty.

2. To be a role model and effective leader.

3. To participate in direct patient care.

4. To work closely with carers and relatives to ensure individualized patient centered care is provided.

5. To obtain patient and relative feedback by undertaking clinical rounds with the aim of providing excellent standards of care.

6. To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard and to audit documentation in liaison with the Matron. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.

7. To work in close liaison with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

8. To promote the development of evidenced based practice on the ward.

9. To promote clinical supervision on the ward within the Trusts strategy.

10. To ensure high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcome measures.

11. Explore opportunities to develop nursing roles in accordance with the Chief Nursing Officer of Englands Ten Key Roles

12. Advise patients on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness

13. To liaise with other departments in the hospital e.g. Estates, Facilities, Finance, IT, to ensure that services supplied are of an acceptable standard and problems identified are registered and addressed. On-going or serious problems will be notified to the line manager.




Educational Role

:

1. To identify educational needs of all members of staff through regular appraisal and review, taking appropriate action in liaison with the Matron

2. To be aware of the educational needs of student nurses ensuring that preceptors and assessors are available. Work in close liaison with the Practice Facilitators and other educational staff.

3. To be responsible for the orientation and development of new staff to the area, including the allocation of a preceptor.

4. To ensure the ward maintains a sound learning environment for all students.

5. Organise and participate in educational activities (e.g. teaching programmes) within the clinical area.


Professional Development:





1. To participate in own Appraisal, developing and actioning a Personal Development Plan (PDP) in liaison with the Matron.

2. To attend appropriate educational programmes to develop his/her self and team in accordance with the needs of the service.

3. To adhere at all times to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and any other NMC guidelines and regulations.
