This post attracts a £15K Recruitment & Retention package to the successful candidate appointed. *Terms and Conditions apply* We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Haematologist to join our innovative team. This additional post has been created due to demand to support the growth of the department. You will become part of a well-established team of nine consultants, providing comprehensive diagnostic and clinical haematology services which are delivered in a dedicated Outpatient department with adjoining dedicated Day Unit as well as delivering inpatient care to BCSH Level 3. Covering all aspects of district general haematology practice, the expectation for the successful candidate is to bring a sub-specialist interest to complement and support the existing consultant team. The department is particularly interested in candidates with an interest in haemostasis and thrombosis to further enhance its specialist pathways. You will have opportunities for continuous professional development and will join a JACIE-accredited service with an established transplant team. The department has a strong portfolio of trials and is supported by an active cancer clinical trials research team. The department was awarded Myeloma UK Clinical Service Excellence Programme award in June 2024 in recognition of the outstanding care and dedication provided to patients. The Consultant team consists of 9 consultants and is supported by 2 - 3 NTN Specialist Registrars, 3 - 4 Specialty Doctors, 1 Clinical fellow and 1 ST1/2, with additional junior medical staff covering the ward. We have recently expanded the nursing team to 1 Macmillan Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 1 Transfusion Practitioner and 7 Specialist Nurses, covering transplant, MPN, myeloma, lymphoma, myeloid disorders and haemoglobinopathy. The team are also well supported by 3 non-medical prescribing pharmacists. The successful candidate will join an established team within the Trust, working closely with Oncology and other specialities within the Trust as required. The post-holder will provide specialist Haematology services, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. He/she will be expected to work closely with general practitioners and hospital-based medical and laboratory staff to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality patient care. This includes managing inpatients to BCSH Level 3 care at the Regional Cancer Centre based at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) on a rotational basis, though the post will include duties at both CGH and Gloucester Royal Hospital. The post is available at 10 PAs per week including on-call commitments shared with the other 8 consultant colleagues on the rota, 1:8 depending on the agreed job plan. Whole-time, part-time or job share applicants welcome. About us Clinical responsibilities The post is a general Haematology post covering all areas of district general Haematology practice. However, a sub-specialist interest would be expected to complement the sub-specialist interests of the existing Haematology Consultant establishment. The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting to the department with haematological disorders To diagnose and treat both inpatients and outpatients under the care of the department To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff To provide on call support out of hours to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. To remain contactable and available when on call. Liaise and provide advice to other clinicians, other hospital staff and general practitioners about haematological conditions Laboratory responsibilities To share responsibility for the diagnostic services with the other Consultant Haematologists including laboratory and diagnostic tests and their interpretation To advise and liaise with other hospital clinicians and primary care regarding laboratory results and their interpretation Education and training The appointee will be expected to take a full role in undergraduate teaching, including clinical meetings and medical undergraduate tutorials. The Department is actively involved in providing pathology teaching to 4rd Year Bristol medical students. The appointee will also be expected to assist in the training of technical and scientific staff To assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, StRs, and other staff as appropriate Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning. Other Responsibilities To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCPath guidelines The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. Research The post holder will be encouraged to be active in clinical research, particularly with reference to active recruitment of patients to clinical trials held on the local clinical trials portfolio. A mentoring scheme for new consultant staff is well established and each new appointee will be appointed a mentor shortly after appointment.
