The Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist role at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust involves significant professional autonomy and clinical judgment in managing patients with asthma, COPD, and those requiring non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Responsibilities include assessing patients in the emergency department and during hospital admission, initiating home oxygen therapy, conducting diagnostic clinics (including lung function tests), and educating other healthcare professionals. The specialist will coordinate care across the Trust, conducting home visits for patients unable to attend community clinics, and will serve as a key resource for the multi-disciplinary team, patients, and their families.

Additional duties involve performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the indirect supervision of a consultant, interpreting results, and developing further treatment plans. The role also encompasses leading national audits, supporting primary care, referring patients to tertiary institutions when necessary, and engaging in research initiatives to assist in service development. Overall, the specialist will play a vital role in enhancing respiratory care within the community and hospital settings.
