The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a full-time Medical Laboratory Assistant to join the Pathology Specimen Reception team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication skills, with the ability to maintain composure under pressure. While prior experience in an NHS clinical laboratory is advantageous, it is not essential as comprehensive training will be provided. Applicants should have a good secondary education, including GCSEs in English, Maths, and Science.

The role involves receiving and preparing patient samples, entering data, preparing chemical solutions, managing laboratory supplies, and maintaining equipment. The position requires flexibility for 24/7 operations, including weekends and holidays, with a standard commitment of 37.5 hours per week, though 30-hour contracts may be considered. Candidates are encouraged to fully state their GCSE grades in their applications, as adherence to the person specification is necessary for consideration.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a permanent, full-time Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Pathology Specimen Reception team, based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. We are seeking a self-motivated and conscientious individual who has an organised approach with good attention to detail and who can remain calm in stressful situations. You will need excellent communication and observation skills and should enjoy working as part of a team.

Previous experience in a NHS clinical laboratory or in analytical techniques would be an advantage but not essential as full training will be provided. A good level of secondary education is required with English, Maths and Science to GCSE grade 9 - 4 (or equivalent).

The post is for 37.5 hours a week but 30 hour contracts will be considered . You will be required to support 24/7 working. This includes includes weekends, Bank/ Public holidays, late shifts and 12hour night shifts .

The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant is varied and involves supporting the scientific staff in the receipt, data entry and pre-analytic preparation of patient samples, preparing chemical solutions, maintaining stocks of consumable items, disposal of chemical and/ or biological waste, and maintaining and decontamination of complex laboratory equipment and as such is a key role in supporting a diagnostic service.
