The role of Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry-Inpatient at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHSFT in Salford involves providing clinical care to 18 adult inpatients, leading the ward teams, and contributing to the overall management and development of ward operations. The consultant will collaborate with the Home-Based Treatment Team and Care Coordinators from Community Mental Health Teams to facilitate patient discharge and offer alternatives to inpatient admission. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, diagnosing complex cases, managing treatment-resistant presentations, assessing and managing risks, and preparing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals.
The position requires a collaborative approach, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners, including forensic and rehabilitation psychiatrists. This role is critical in ensuring effective patient care and supporting the mental health services in Salford.

The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical care to 18 inpatients of adult of working age and medical leadership to the inpatient ward teams, as well as supporting and contributing to the management and development of the ward functioning. The post holder will work with the Home-Based Treatment Team and Care Coordinators from the three Community Mental Health Teams in Salford, to facilitate discharge, and provide an alternative to inpatient admission.
- Undertake assessments of referrals/ admissions to the service
- Diagnose and formulate management plans in complex presentations.
- Provide management in treatment resistant and complex presentations
- Assessment and management of risk including of vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health and safety and risk of harm to others.
- Preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal and Managers' Hearings reports and attendance at subsequent hearings.
- Work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary teams including external partners.
- Work in partnership with psychiatrists from partner providers such as Forensic and Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.
