University College London Hospitals seeks to appoint a locum consultant for twelve months to the Department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). The purpose of this position is to meet the anticipated increase in clinical activity this year while providing a consultant-led service. The successful candidate will have job focus and on-call responsibility to neurocritical care, with sessions in neuroanaesthesia..This position would be suitable for a candidate interested in a future substantive role in neurocritical care and neuroanaesthesia, who wishes to gain further experience in both.
NHNN provides tertiary level care in a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical disease with a regional, national and international referral base. The hospital is co-located with the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London WC1. Both institutions share the common aim of promoting research and teaching in neuroscience and its allied disciplines.
The neuroscience critical care unit is a 28 bedded unit with approximately 900 admissions a year of which 35-40% are elective admissions. The postholder will join the department of Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care, which comprises 28 consultants and 39 trainees.Please attach CV with application.
The postholder will manage patient care within all areas of the neurocritical care unit, working across the acute admissions and ongoing level 3 units, the level 2 high dependency unit, as well as providing senior support to the critical care outreach team. They will provide on-call cover on a 1:9 basis, as well as a component of daytime weekend working providing support to the on-call consultant.
The postholder will teach and supervise junior medical staff from intensive care, anaesthetic, internal medicine and neurosurgical backgrounds. They will participate in departmental teaching, audit, MDT and morbidity and mortality meetings.
The postholder will be expected to carry out all the necessary administrative duties associated with the care of patients. They will become a member of the medical committee and be expected to attend monthly consultant departmental meetings. They will also be expected to participate in other committee work and are encouraged to bring existing non-clinical interests to the post.
Neuroanaesthesia sessions are anticipated to comprise approximately 50% of the initial job plan and may include theatre sessions in complex spine, interventional neuroradiology (including thrombectomy), functional, vascular and oncological neurosurgery.

Job PlanThe job plan for this post will be made up of 10 programmed activities (PA) per week. Application is open to those who wish to job share or work less than full time. Flexible working for non-clinical commitments is supported at UCLH. The job plan will consist of 8.5 PAs Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 PAs Supporting Professional Activities. Up to 3.125 DCC will be allocated to anaesthesia at appointment. A job planning meeting will take place within 6 months of taking up the post to ensure DCC sessions are appropriate and to review SPA allocation, as well as review the balance of anaesthetic commitments if applicable.
The postholder will take part in the on-call rota covering out of hours activity in neurocritical care. The on-call frequency will be a 1 in 9 and is remunerated at 1.9 PAs. An additional 0.4 PA is reserved for daytime weekend work on a not on-call basis.
In accordance with Schedule 12, Paragraph 2 of the National Consultants Contract Terms and Conditions consultants should live within 30 minutes or ten miles by road from their main place of work, if this is not possible then appropriate hotel accommodation will be provided to consultants when they are on call.
