We we are looking for a committed, caring, and compassionate individual to play a vital role in providing quality essential family centred care to women and babies under the direction of the Registered Midwife. Opportunities have arisen for Maternity Support Workers to join our Multi-Professional Team in its deliverance of high quality care to our women/birthing partners and their families.

Apprenticeships are designed to give talented people an opportunity to gain a nationally recognized qualification while completing on the job training. You will be supported to learn and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to perform in your job role with study time allocated within your working hours to gain a qualification.

For this role you will undertake a 22-month development programme for Senior Healthcare Support Worker within the Maternity Services department, through work-based learning and by attending regular training sessions. Successfully completing the training programme will lead to an Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3.

This position is on a fixed term contract with the opportunity to become permanent once the qualification is successfully completed and achieved. Please be advised if you already hold a relevant qualification in this subject area at this level or higher you are not eligible to apply.

This role comprises working within a Multi - Professional Team delivering high quality care to women/birthing partners and their families. Applicants ideally must have had prior experience working within a Maternity Department and will be expected to work independently; undertaking tasks, whilst remaining under the supervision of midwives. This will include providing care and support to postnatal women/birthing partners and their babies, phlebotomy, breastfeeding support and advice, and maintenance of essential equipment.

Working as a Maternity Support Worker enables you to gain exposure to a wide range of skills and offers extensive scope for professional development under the supervision of midwives. The Trust provides an extensive range of in-house training and support in ongoing professional development. Your personal development will be identified at your annual appraisal reviews and supported by your team leads and senior midwifery managers.

2. Clinical ResponsibilitiesTo maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within all clinical areas, ie. cleaning delivery rooms, theatres, equipment, making beds and keeping a good stock supply.To assist the midwives in the care of women antenatally, during labour and postnatally to ensure that planned programmes of care are provided.To participate in the provision of 24-hour cover for the unit, including flexibility to move within team areas as the service requires.Assist with all aspects of clients hygiene and personal needs as required.To assist in the provision of food and drink to women.To provide appropriate advice, within their level of knowledge, to parents on aspects of parenting in relation to the babys well-being and safety.Supporting women with all methods of infant feeding. Be proactive in supporting women with breastfeeding and give them theadvice and assistance they require according to the national and Trust guidelines.Assisting women with their babies hygiene needs,To maintain accurate records of all care provision in the clinical recordsTo escort patients to different clinical areas within the unit. This may involve the use of wheelchairs or beds and trolleys.Be aware of emergency calling procedures to be able to call for assistance for the nurse or midwife when asked to do so according to agreed protocols.To participate in emergency situations to act as a scribe or runner.To act as a chaperone.To demonstrate initiative and the ability to recognise/identify changes in awoman or babys condition/treatment and report promptly to the midwife/nurse or medical staff as appropriate.Perform the following clinical duties informing the midwife of the results and recording these appropriately:Taking temperature, pulse and blood pressureMaintaining fluid balance chartsTaking blood if trained or undertaking training and assessment toacquire these skillsLast reviewed:Obtaining and testing mid-stream urine samplesTaking of blood samples from mothers and babiesObservations (heartrate, respiratory rate, temperature, generalwellbeing) for newborns, if trained to do so, as directed by midwife ordoctor.Contribute to effective and timely discharge planning.To work in the theatre when required. Assisting the scrub nurse/midwife in the operating theatre after appropriate training.Reporting faculty equipment to the midwife co-ordinator and completingrequisitions as required or requested. Request and follow up on repairs. Assisting the midwife/doctor with aseptic procedures, e.g. cervical smears, taking blood, inserting urinary catheters, vaginal examination, etc. Act in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers inEngland.To understand and support safeguarding principles for clients and escalate any concerns to the midwife in charge. At all times to respect clients privacy and dignity.To communicate in an appropriate manner with women and relatives at all times.To demonstrate a sound of understanding of local and the trusts Adult and Child protection policies and procedures as relevant to your role.

AdministrativeProvide administrative support to midwives, updating Medway as required.To prioritise care and clerical work as appropriate.Answering the telephone and relaying messages to the appropriate member of staff.Ensuring the safekeeping of clients property in accordance with the trust policy.To participate in audit as appropriate keeping up to date with changing practises.To understand the principles of the Friends and Family Test and client feedback and how it is used to improve and maintain an excellent client experience.

4. Education and DevelopmentThrough the appraisal system, ensure own training needs are identified.All mandatory training is kept up to date as required.Attend staff meetings, including team briefings and read information asrequired.
